Riise In For Milner?
By Tyne-Talk May 11 2008
Today's summer transfer speculation links Newcastle United's James Milner with a move to Anfield with Liverpool ace John Arne Riise going the other way (and possibly £3m). Newcastle have been linked with up to 5 Liverpool players over the past few weeks including Jermaine Pennant and Peter Crouch who is unhappy with the £15million price tag slapped on him by his club.

Benitez said of Riise:

"He is still our player at the moment and he knows if we receive a good offer - good for him and the club - it could be. But he is a fantastic professional."

Keegan will be looking to enhance his back four over the summer months but do we really want to give Milner away in the process?

Milner who has previously spent a loan spell at Aston Villa had looked set to re-establish those links but if Liverpool put an offer in for him, would the 22 year old say no?

I would like Riise, and if Milner went to Liverpool I'd be disapointed but would be glad to see him play CL football and we would then have to play the 433

Re: Riise In For Milner?
I would hate to lose Milner. Especially since Riise seems past it and I thought we had a good LB in Enrique. Unless they are talking about Riise on the LM which is pointless since we have a player of Emre's talent. I hope this is only talk.

Milner is a player we must keep a hold of.

I'll be raging if we let him go http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4641/73095201el5.gif

Riise and £8M, more like it-he wouldn't bring in more than £2-3M on his own in my opinion.

I'd have Riise, but I certainly don't want to lose Milner. Between that and likely losing Zog while holding onto Butt and (presumably) Viduka our squad would suddenly become quite old-and it isn't the most pacy side in the PL as it stands.

As long as Rafa values Crouch at £5M more than Gareth Barry, no one should do any business with LFC regarding that overhyped squad player.

Milner gives 100% every game. I'd hate to lose him.

Re: Riise In For Milner?
I for one would sell Milner. I see him as another player who has promised a lot yet provided little. A player who will always give you 100% but has begun to stagnate. I firmly believe that James can be replaced with better and we must be seen to be moving forward. We tried him on the right, then the left, then the right again but he never quite fitted either to perfection. He takes a defender on..beats him, then tries to beat him again as he sadly lacks a burst of pace to get to the line. I will applaud him upon his return as he rarely let us down, just like Shola i suppose, but the funds raised and the opening created would be worth the sale.

He's better than Shola ever was, Rodders, seriously. I suppose we could improve on him but I wouldn't rush to sell him even if we did. Geremi is aging and good wide players are quite rare even for sides willing to spend (just ask the rats). I also don't think he's hit his ceiling yet.

Re: Riise In For Milner?
i agree with a lot of that rodders, but havent we seen keegan bring more out of certain players in the past? since we have him, i wouldnt be in a hurry to sell just yet. lets see if a change in coaching methods, and a bit of personal attention from the manager, can make james into the player we hoped he would already be by now.
and if we are in the position of needing the 7 or 8 mil that he would be sold for, we are already stuffed as far as next season goes

Re: Riise In For Milner?
I am not promoting ideas of selling Milner and i for one would love KK to get an extra 10% out of him. I just think that there are other wingers out there who would be worth talking too if Milner moved on. Life without James Milner would not be doom and gloom.

Re: Riise In For Milner?
if he left, we'd have another hole in the squad which would need urgent filling. as it stands we all know and probably agree on the certain areas where we are desperate for new players. maybe if we get the most urgent reinforcements in first, a centre half (or two) centre mid (or three!) etc, we can then look at improvements elsewhere. in the meantime, i wouldnt sell anyone at all, until we buy a few. the eleven who played out the last three months did well-ish, but a few injuries would have knackered us

Re: Riise In For Milner?
I hear you, Rodders. But wide midfield players are truly rare finds. This is why clubs like Liverpool and Villa-who have talented and deep (at least LFC) squads, finished high up the table and are looking up-are after him. Unless someone comes with an outlandishly high fee I say we should keep him. Riise (whom Benitez wants to dump) and £3M (the fee we're looking at getting for Shola) isn't nearly enough.
