Words that have got me through a long
and painful off season. There is no more time for talking, only
time for action. We will soon find out what our club is made of
and for all of my good intentions, I am a tad nervous. This group of players saw us to our first ever wooden spoon. Sure there were reasons but they played their part and have to accept part of the blame. Now our players are facing a few years in the wilderness without an opportunity to replenish their stocks. It is up to them ... to show they have pride in themselves and in the club and to show that they have the talent to compete in the upper echelons. How they are looked at 5, 10, 50 years from now depends on how they approach this 2003 season. are they a bunch of front running losers or are they a talented team who fell victim to circumstance? The football gods have given them every opportunity to find that winning formula by delivering super coach Denis Pagan gift wrapped on the Optus Oval doorstep. If Denis and the caning by the AFL don't inspire the team, then quite frankly nothing will and it will be a long time before success shows itself around Navy Blue land. We might not have the talent to reach for the heavens this season but by god, we had better be well stocked on spirit. No shirking of a task, no hanging the head and giving up. There are plenty of haunting reminders that should raise the adrenaline in any player worth their salt. If not, they will be out the door in record time. If we are right about Pagan and we hope we are, nothing short of 100% commitment for four quarters will be tolerated. Do it for the fans boys, do it for the coach, do it for the club, but most of all, do it for yourselves and your place in the pages of history. The chance for redemption ... it's all up to you.
