After a wooden spoon season, shocking injuries,
shake ups at coaching and board level and deplorable salary cap breaches
that saw us robbed of the much lauded 1 & 2 draft picks, the news was
pretty timely. Now that this chapter is over, time to exercise much caution still. Further salary cap breaches have been detected with extra payments made to Matthew Allan through his manager David Allison. After the massive fine imposed by the AFL the first time around, one shudders to think what they can still do to us. I will go on record here to say that if the AFL had have investigated all breaches and imposed a penalty accordingly, they could hardly have done any worse than they already have. It was the AFL's choice to act with haste on initial findings to snare the first two picks in the draft and donate them to St Kilda and the Roos, and they can only hit us hard for two consecutive drafts according to their own rules. A fine will suffice but one wonders if we would have paid more than $930,000 if all penalties were imposed concurrently. Also the hard work on the field is yet to be done though training indications are that the Blues are flying in the preseason. I can hardly wait to see something positive come out of all this and to see the new game plan implemented by new Blues coach, Denis Pagan. Should be exciting times ahead. Even problem players like Brendan Fevola and Ryan Houlihan have stood out during training sessions and the feeling abounds that if anyone can get the best out of these wayward, often disinterested, but talented players, Denis Pagan is the man. As we speak 2003 memberships are being snapped up at an impressive speed. It is up to all of us to do our part and support the club for all the thrilling times they have provided us with. Fightback 2003, it's going to be a biggie!!!
