Cherry-O Glamorgan

Superb Return
By Jeremy Horne September 14 2005
Scott Styris produced a devastating spell of death bowling as Middlesex came back to stun Glamorgan, claiming a victory that secured 2nd in the league. The visitors had looked well in control at 219-5, with Michael Powell on form, but Styris took 4-56 as the ‘sex won by 5 runs.

Choosing to bat first, Middlesex survived the early loss of Ed Smith to build a promising platform thanks to half centuries from Weekes and Shah. A 250+ target looked promising, but the ‘sex lost their way slightly, with Weekes caught in the deep and then Dalrymple needlessly run out soon after. Scott Styris and Ed Joyce then weighed in with some useful blows as both scored valuable 30’s. Peter Trego also played his part in taking Middlesex to a competitive 239-5, before starring with the ball as the Welshmen were reduced to 33-2.

Wharf then threatened briefly for the dragons, flaying Betts and Trego for some lusty boundaries in his 20 ball 40, before he was dismissed by Styris with the score at 57.

Powell’s defiance frustrated the ‘sex as he picked of the ones and two’s, but found the boundaries hard to come by. Together with David Hemp, he began rebuilding the innings, although Hemp’s dismissal put a halt on their progress. Powell was then joined by Daniel Cherry, with both playing strongly and looking like they were going to seize the initiative. This did prove difficult though, with Middlesex’s spin trio of Weekes, Peploe and Dalrymple keeping it tight at both ends. The reward came too, with Cherry easily stumped by Ben Scott off Dalrymple, thus bringing youngster Richard Grant to the crease.

Styris return saw the end of Cherry and the end of the game as Wallace followed next ball and Harrison was needlessly run out in the following over, attempting (for some odd reason) to take the strike from Powell. Davies soon followed to Peploe, bringing last man Dean Cosker to the crease, with 13 needed to win from just over 2 overs.

Once again, it was Cosker who was seemingly stealing the strike, an odd tactic given the circumstances. It didn’t pay off either, with Styris returning to bowl him in the next over.

And so the ‘sex claim second- definitely a good result for our first season in the top flight, but we all know that both of those games against Essex should have been won.
