Weekes & Smith Humble Northumberland

Unbeaten ton
By David Slater May 4 2005
An emphatic display by Paul Weekes and Ed Smith guided Middlesex to a stylish victory at Jesmond against Northumberland. The match was unaffected by the rain that forced the start to be put back a day.

Having elected to field first, Middx set about setting as small a target as possible. It started well enough with Worthy falling in the first over to Chad Keegan. The Middx bowlers carried on their fine form reducing the hosts to 87/6 at one point, Jamie Dalrymple taking three in his first bowling display of the season. Enter Stephen Humble. He hit 88 off 76 balls to cause concern for Middlesex as the Northerners reached 206/8 at the end of their 50 overs.

The concern was brushed away in style with Paul Weekes and Ed Smith punishing the Northumberland bowlers. Weekes hit 106 from 115, including twelve 4s and four 6s. Smith hitting 96 from 76 balls, including eleven 4s and three 6s. The target was reached in 31.3 overs. The bowling statistics made for uncomfortable reading for the hosts, with the most notable being Mr Crozier who, despite bowling a madien, went for 86 off his 10 overs.

Next up for Middlesex are the bacon slayers (lame I know but I couldn't resist!), Northamptonshire, who beat Denmark by 8 wickets in Brondby yesterday after bowling the hosts out for 56. Only extras got into double figues (24) with Charl Pietersen taking 7-10. The Northants batsmen achieved the win with predictable ease, finishing on 59/2. The match will take place on Tuesday the 17th of May, at Lord's
