Shah shines at seaside

Superb ton
By Jeremy Horne September 6 2004
Owais Shah scored a brave century to lead Middlesex to an unexpected 5 wicket victory on the final day at Hove. Needing to produce the highest total of the game in order to win, Shah’s battling hundred was well supported by Sven Koenig (49) and Paul Weekes (50no).

Warwickshire were handed the title and the ‘sex eased their relegation fears as they stole victory from Sussex’s hands at the seaside. The Sussex bowlers could not seem to find the right recipe as Middlesex’s batsmen strolled home in what should have been a difficult chase.

DAY 2 NEWS:

Middx were left facing a deja vu situation tonight needing 280 runs to beat Sussex, with 9 wickets in hand in a similar situation to the one where they lost to Sussex a few weeks ago. In an action packed day 2, 17 wickets fell as Middlesex were first bowled out for 135, Sussex replied scoring 141 all out, a lead of 283.

There was just enough time for 5 overs of the Middlesex innings and for Ben Hutton to get another duck. Chris Peploe came in as the nightwatchman and scored the only runs of the innings so far as Middlesex closed on 4/1 with 280 left to go and the prospect of Mushtaq Ahmed and his favorite conditions

DAY 1 NEWS:

Sussex fought back after the Middlesex bowlers had produced a good display on the opening day at Hove. After being reduced to 129-7, the hosts fought back with a half century from Robin Martin Jenkins and 48 from Mushtaq Ahmed as they ended on 277 all out.

Middlesex had Chris Peploe to thank in the bowling department as it was his four wickets that brought about Sussex’s demise. Two wickets apiece from Stuart Clark, Nantie Hayward and Paul Weekes also dented the progress of the championship chasers.

Confirmation that the wicket was suiting the bowlers was given when it was Middlesex’s turn to bat. The Sussex bowlers took four wickets before the close as Middlesex struggled to 31-4, after having been 8-3 at one stage. Sven Koenig had been the mainstay of the debacle, remaining 5 not out after opening the batting.
