Humiliated
By Jeremy Horne August 29 2003
Middlesex suffered a dreadful batting collapse to slip to a shock defeat against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. We lost our last 6 wickets for 20 runs, subsiding to 171 all out. Waqar Younis claimed 5 wickets, whilst Alan Richardson took 3 in an over. We began the day 115-2, needing just 88 more to win.
You'd have backed Middlesex to win after the close yesterday- but then this is August. We needed just 88 for victory and had time and wickets in our favour. But victory was snatched away from us after one of the most dreadful batting collapses of the season saw our last 8 wickets fall for 56. Nobody outside the top four made double figures and we will now have to wait until next week to secure our division 1 future.

DAY 3:
Middlesex were on the brink of victory at Edgbaston. The 'sex got the 4 remaining wickets they needed (Bloomers 4/57, Keegan 4/67) and were set a target of 203 to win. Despite the early loss of Weston, Middlesex recovered to 115/2 at close. 88 runs short of their target.

DAY 2:
Good day all round especially is it looked like we were really up against it.
Shah for a valuable 54 and Weston were out early on and at 99-4 it looked like we'd concede a huge deficit. However, Joyce dominated useful stands with middle order and tail & his 107 got us to get to within four runs.

Amazingly he and Bloomers put on 44 for last wicket with Bloomers contributing 9. Keeeeegan and Bloomers after a worrying expensive start again combined to cut through the Bears top-order. After slumping to 20-3 early on, they fought back thanks to 46 from Mark Wagh and an unbeaten 29 from Jim Troughton (Who are you). But Bloomers hit back late on for 'Sex, removing Wagh and Dougie Brown for a duck, before Ashley Giles fell to Paul Weekes for nine. The Bears hold a slender 117-run lead at stumps with 6 wickets down. On what seems to be a dodgy wicket and Waqar on form this could still be very tight.

DAY 1:
After the batsmen's paradise of Old Trafford, Edgbaston proved to be more bowler friendly as 12 wickets fell on day 1. Four Middlesex bowlers took wickets as Warwickshire were all out for 290. Waqar Younis then removed both Middlesex openers early, but we recovered to reach 78-2 at stumps.

Middlesex made 3 changes to the team that drew with Lancashire last time out as Weston came in for the injured Koenig and the overseas stars were replaced by Cook and Bloomfield. Andrew Strauss then won the toss and after putting Warwickshire in, Chad Keegan dismissed danger man Nick Knight early before a stand of 97 between Michael Powell and Mark Wagh saw the home side to 117-1. Both men reached half centuries as Warwickshire went to lunch on 155-2.

Middlesex were more disciplined after the break, taking two early wickets as 155-2 became 156-4. Dougie Brown tried to recover the situation for his side as he hit a useful 71, but the last six wickets went down for just 60 runs. Middlesex then began the response badly as Strauss scored his first championship duck in 71 innings and Ben Hutton went for 5. But Weston and Shah fought hard to see us to the close without any further loss.
