Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Chelsea v Newcastle
By Tyne-Talk
November 21 2008
Newcastle United head to London for tomorrow's clash with Chelsea for what is a very important game for both clubs. With 19 points separating the two teams and 17 Premier League places between them, both teams are in need of the 3 points to distance themselves from their nearest rivals.
Chelsea can only go down results depending but Newcastle could potentially see themselves edging their way towards the top 10 should things go their way whilst currently only goal differences separates them from the relegation zone.

Chelsea have won their last 4 Premier League games, only slipping up in other competitions with defeats against both Burnley in the League Cup and Roma in the Champions League. Newcastle however have drawn 2 lost 2 and won 2 of their last 6 games.

Chelsea will be without Didier Drogba who is serving a 3 match FA enforced ban after throwing a coin into the crowd during his comeback match against Burnley and Frank Lampard is a doubt after suffering a rib injury which caused him to withdraw from the England squad in midweek. Chelsea will however welcome Joe Cole (hamstring) and Petr Cech (calf) back into the squad, but both Ashley Cole and Joe Cole are likely to start on the bench due to low levels of fitness.

Newcastle's Steven Taylor is set to miss out with a groin injury leaving Kinnear to choose between Bassong, Coloccini and Claudio Cacapa, whilst striker Michael Owen is set after putting in extra training to boost his fitness having recovered from injury.

Gonzalez, Viduka, Smith and Barton also remain sidelined through injury.

I agree, I hate to sound disloyal but I don't see us doing any better than Chelsea 2 NUFC 1.
I'd love it if they proved me wrong.
C'mon the Toon.

Yeah same here, would loved to be proved wrong, but I'm seeing a Chelsea 4-0 scoreline.

Chelski have the upper hand but we're still pegged at 0-0.
A combination of dodgy Chelski shooting and Shay Given has kept us in the game.

Come on Toon.

Smoggies 0-2 Bolton
Man City 1-0 Arsenal (wonder if Gallas will chuck his toys out the pram again? - where ever he is today LOL)

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Chelsea v Newcastle
Bassong is definitely man of the match. He has won everything that has been thrown into the box by Chelsea. He is a more than able deputy for Steven Taylor. I reckon Taylor will have trouble getting back into the side.

Martins, Gutierrez and Beye have been behind our best attacking play, even if it was only 2 attacks.

I love Martins, he did really well to keep the ball, he was all alone with bosingwa and you think, ok he's going to skin him down the line, and instead he backheels it to a Chelsea player with no newcastle player in sight! Brilliant and frustrating. However his brilliance outweighs his erratic play at times.

And freaking Warren Barton is so annoying! he keeps calling Colocinni, Cudicinni. He says he's a poor player making all the mistakes in newcastle's last few games. He knows nothing!

He certainly is Carys.
The time he threw a wobbler last season when Arsenal drew 2-2 with Birmingham was nothing short of embarrasing for the gunners.
This latest outburst just takes the biscuit.

I wonder how this match goes if Martins and Jonas are fully fit. They're our best options on a quick break/counterattack.

This is a great result, but it does make me wonder about our boys' level of motivation. Why do we play so well against quality opposition but then produce such@#$%&against sides like Fulham?

Great result. Tunyc brings up a good point though. A draw against Man Utd away, a draw against Chelsea away, conceding one goal in the both games combined, yet we concede at least two goals against Everton, Fulham, Sunderland, West Ham and Arsenal on our travels, and Wigan, Man City, Tottenham and Hull City at home. Why is that? Having said that though its a great result and we can take many positives from today. Well Done lads, you proved me wrong!

Well well well Superb !!!!! what a lift for the whole squad this is better than the manure result when you consider the players chelski had on the field and ok we got a bit lucky with the goal which should of stood but last year same game it was a dodgy off side goal that beat us maybe we might just start getting that vital bit of luck all teams need and use this to push on up the table all hail great given!!!!!

No the linesman got the decision right.

IT WAS OFFSIDE!

when malouda took the shot, joe cole was offside.

Bit boring that is an under statement, don't make me laugh, was it really your best performance of the season Owen passed the halfway line once, you had one shot at goal and that nearly went out for a corner.

Oh and re: the disallowed goal, as there seems to be some confusion...

You'll find that Cole is clearly offside when Malouda takes his shot; it doesn't matter that he's an inactive player when that ball is played (it wasn't played to Cole) because he gains an advantage from being in an offside position when the ball rebounds directly to him.

Law 11, under the 'Offence' clause:
The Law
