Jonnyboy reports on the Twenty20 contest between Middlex and Essex at Lord's. Once again this season, a must-read match report for the Middlesex fan and a stomach-churning reading experience for the Essex faithful. Heck, he's just reporting what he saw, folks. Many thanks to Jonnyboy for this report.

The first out of three T20's at Lord's as the Eagles were entertained by the Crusaders. Despite some early light rain and an overcast atmosphere it soon cleared and the toss was made, Ed winning and choosing to field. The replay screens featured Simon Hughes and a chirpy female commentator interviewing the players and the like.

First up - a superb show of bowling by the "Boys in Pink". Opening the bowling with Dirk Nannes and Tim Murtagh, the seamers consistently bowled line and length and showed good variation and the Essex batsmen could not hit boundaries. The run rate was painfully slow and Murto made the breakthrough thanks to a superb low catch from Dawid Malan. The potentially destructive Essex Captain Mark Pettini soon departed off the bowling of Nannes. Essex shifted their batting order a bit and Middlebrook came in, presumably to accelerate the innings, but this was to no avail as Shaggy snared him, again thanks to a fine catc, this time from Ed Joyce.

Murali Kartik made his first appearance at HQ this season and looked in fine form along with the rest of the bowling attack, taking the vital wickets of Grant Flower and Ryan Ten Doeschate, both trapped LBW.

Foster and Napier did not last long and Essex were running out of chances. Some hard graft from Neil Dexter (on loan from Kent) helped Essex achieve an almost respectable score of 115.

Strauss and Smith began cautiously after the interval preventing the unnecessary concession of an early wicket. Despite Andy playing on from a full length ball by Napier.

Morgan and Captain Ed led the way with a fine partnership, providing several boundaries to entertain the crowd and some good running, with Strauss returning to the middle after Smith incurred some sort of injury to his leg.

The debutant Chambers was desperately unlucky, unaided by the Essex fielders, in particular James Middlebrook involved in three dropped catches! Malan and Joyce saw the boys home to record a 2nd consecutive victory, with a return trip to Chelmsford next on Sunday as the Crusaders look to maintain their 100% record in the Twenty20.

Good report mate. As one who also helps out from time to time. Gotta say that the replay screens are excellent and help to clarify. They also add to the atmosphere of the occasion. As one who was at the Rose Bowl: happy to say that 'The Old Middle' gave another quality performance. What needs to happen now after a good start: is to follow up on that: and don't repeat the FPT route. All of the bowlers were supported in the field, as you say.
