Few would argue that Ireland really missed the irrepressible presence of Robbie Keane up front, and the loss of John O`Shea after just 24 minutes also helped thwart the Irish cause.
But make no mistake, Ireland just didn’t perform to the best of their abilities, and the Russians were anything but the ‘shambles’ their own president had labelled them.
A draw in the end was probably the fair result. The game had very little clear-cut goal scoring chances, with Ireland’s goal being Duff-magic orientated and Russia scoring from a scrappy corner.
Damien Duff was singled out as Ireland’s most likely source of a goal, and he did not disappoint. A mazy run from forty metres out, beating two men, before firing a shot into the bottom left corner. With a small deflection, but none to make such a dramatic effect, in the 35th minute.
Seven minutes later, the Russians struck back with a set piece, which Shay Given might have dealt with better. After making an impressive save from Kerzhakov, Given tried to punch and missed, with Ignashevich being the chief benefactor.
After the break, Kerr switched Steven Reid for Lee Carsley on the right wing, in an effort to get at Russia down the flanks. The ploy was rarely seen in action, as Russia worked to a plan and kept it well.
With not much happening, Doherty was introduced for Morrison, who lacked service as much as anything. But this time, Doherty couldn’t rescue Ireland with a late effort and the match finished as a score draw.
Not enough players were on form for the Irish, Colin Healy going missing a number of times throughout proceedings; a lack of match practice possibly affecting his performance.
The same cannot be said for Kevin Kilbane though, who was truly outstanding on the left wing. His overall contribution consisted of 100% effort, quality running and a true interest to get things moving for the Irish cause.
Kevin Kilbane may have his fair share of critics, including those on this website, but when a player turns out a good performance like that – everyone should sit up and take notice. David Moyes of Everton must be pleased with his new signing, epitomising what he wishes to have at Everton.
Duff also worked tirelessly to drag Ireland across the winning line, but to no avail, as the Russians matched his efforts and were secure in defence.
The only bookings of the match for Ireland were Kevin Kilbane and Kenny Cunningham. So when Ireland travels to the Wankdorf Stadium next month, they must do it without their captain Cunningham, who will be suspended.
A tough task lies ahead of Brian Kerr’s side, with Group 10 closing up, it will not be easy to make it to even the play-offs.
