Under 21s Claim Victory
By Ade O`Connor September 6 2003
The Irish Under 21 side scored two goals in the second half to finally win their first game of the qualifying stage. Of course, Ireland did beat Albania but had the result reversed after fielding the banned Miller. The senior team will want to follow this example on Saturday afternoon.
In what may be the last under 21 game for a number of the under age squad, Graham Barrett grabbed the first goal after some excellent build up play from Thomas Butler.

The game was all but sealed when some more impressive play from Butler lead to Barrett’s attempt being saved, but a Russian defender unable to stop the ball hitting his knee and the own goal being scored.

Outstanding displays were across the park, with the likes of Barrett, O`Flynn, Reid and Butler all putting in performances to be proud of.

Ireland’s last under 21 qualifier will be against Switzerland, with Givens expected to name a rather experimental team.
