Boro's goal came swiftly in the eighth minute of play, with Gary O'Neil slicing his shot from the near post to get Boro off the mark. Yakubu's equaliser came in the 65th minute, when Arteta sent a free kick spiralling into the box only for it to come off Yakubu's shoulder and back and end up in the net. How much the ex-Boro player knew about it was questionable, but it was likely a deserved reply considering Everton's domination of possession come the second half.
Gareth Southgate, left with little options on the bench chose to bring on Marvin Emnes in place of Afonso Alves - who it has to be said looked unconvincing once again up front. While the Brazilian manages to get himself in all the right positions, he still seems to get shrugged off the ball far too easily, and while many Boro fans are trying to maintain faith in him some doubts must surely be raised now as to whether he will be able to cope with the Premier League. A positive among a few from the Everton match must surely be the continued great form of young Ross Turnbull who appears to have cemented his position between the Boro posts. I like many Boro fans had my doubts about Southgate's decision to not purchase a replacement goalkeeper, but it seems that we have all been proven wrong currently. With home matches to come against Bolton and Everton an excellen chance is presented to us to really gain some ground on those teams around us. Whether we take our chances or squander an excellent opportunity like we have so often in the past is yet to be seen, but for the moment things are looking positive.
