Late Goals Cost Boro Again at the Stadium of Light

Downing - Missed Penalty
By Luke Sandelands
September 20 2008
The Boro's away day misery continues as we find ourselves on the losing end of a Wear-Tees derby match. Late goals by Michael Chopra proved costly in an away day result which perhaps once again does not provide the evidence of an otherwise reasonably assured Boro performance.

Stewart Downing's missed penalty halfway through the second half of the match proved to be a turning point and Sunderland's fans and players were motivated enough to seal the victory. Considering this is Downing's second penalty miss this season questions might be asked over why Afonso Alves does not take this role, especially as it seems the Brazilian is perhaps struggling to find goals thus far.

The omission of an injured Mido was perhaps a blow, but injuries such as this will crop up through the season and it is essential that we have a squad capable of performing through the hard times. Ross Turnbull's performances have proved to be a bright spark from some miserable away results, and while he made an error today which almost gifted Cisse a goal, it is fair to say Turnbull made some fantastic stops. It seems that perhaps a young Boro side are struggling to finish a full match, and there is a bit of a feeling emerging that the team are lacking backbone. With a tough match at West Brom to come let's hope this does not spread into our home form.

It seems to be the same story away - what looked like being a great season isn't getting off the ground.

Can we get past Man U in the Carling Cup? Not if we concede 2 second half goals!

Activated our Boro Pride cards for the first time so we'll see if they work at the West Brom game. We got them to save queueing after missing the start of the Spurs match in the chaos.

Hope there are a few queues tomorrow - the shine seems to have gone off the season before we got properly started. Lawro has us winning 2-1. That would do me!
