Welcome to this week’s edition of the Tangerine Time Machine and this week it’s a trip to 1976-77, Where Alan Brown’s side took on Sheffield United away from home, for this game Derek Spence and Bob Hatton return to the team, replacing Dave Hockady and Trevor Finnegan. Paul Hart went back to centre-half after playing in midfield for the game against Burnley.

18,357 supporters watched the game; which finished Sheffield United 1 Blackpool 5. The scoring started after just eleven minutes. Hitman Mickey Walsh scoring “one of the finest goals” Gazette reporter Tony Quested claimed to have seen. The goal come after a long rang one-two;  Walsh cut inside from the right, under pressure he found Paul Hart midway, Walsh then gave it legs and Hart lobbed it back over into Walsh’s path.  Walsh then looked up saw the opposition ‘keeper off his line and lobbed the ball over his head, with his first touch.

Then “Ronson’s great left-footer was tipped round the post” whilst Bob Hatton had his “snap-shop” saved by the ‘keeper who pushed it round the post.

Blackpool’s second came on the 16th minute, Ronson picked the ball up on the halfway-line, and he passed the ball to Paul Gardener who then crossed the ball to Bob Hatton who “pummelled a headed past Brown”.

Soon it was 3-0; Ronson floated over a corner kick to the far post, Paul Hart then powered it to the goalmouth. Walsh, who anticipated the move brilliantly, cut across and flicked his header into the back of the net. The travelling Seasiders were delighted, half an hour gone and it was 3-0 to the Seasiders!

Six minutes later, yet another followed! Walsh secured his Hat-Trick with yet another super header. The goal came from a good move which started with Ronson; his through ball beat the offside trap of Sheffield United. Billy Bentley then picked the ball up and crossed it to Walsh who inevitably scored. Sheffield United 0 Blackpool 4

The game then saw Blackpool concede a typical soft goal; however at the time that soft goal set a new record for the scorer Edwards. Who became the first man to score in eight consecutive league games.  United could have had two to the name, but George Wood made a “truly magnificent save” from an Edwards header which fired goal ward.

The game was wrapped up for the Seasiders soon after, a mistake by Colquhoun forced a corner. “Ronson’s rocket straight from the corner arrowed viciously into the net at the near post”. It was job done for the Seasiders. The side was magnificent and the game ended Sheffield 1 Blackpool 5.

There’s not much to report on the second half, because we ran the show. Bill Bentley “ran the show” according to Tony Quested’s report and Blackpool continued to press forward without really threatening the goal. But defended there lead regardless.
