Danny Shittu Played For Both

I need a Shittu
By Paddy May 3 2008
Danny Shittu is well known in Blackpool, the Nigerian centre back now playes for Watford. Former boss Steve McMahon brought the big man to the Seaside in the closing stages of the 2000/2001 season, the year the Pool won promotion to League 1, and he played a key role in the Seasiders clinching promotion.

He scored on his debut at home to Lincoln, and then again at Darlington on the final day to ensure a place in the playoffs. He then played in the semi finals against Hartlepool, before leaving the club just days before the final.

The Nigerian started his career at Charlton, where he couldn’t make an impact, struggling to get out of the reserves. After successful loan spells at a host of clubs, including the Seasiders, he signed permanently for Queens Park Rangers, and along with former Pool centre half, Clarke Carlisle, he aided the London club to promotion to the Championship. He was a signing for QPR thanks to the "Buy a Player for your club" scheme, and played for Rangers 162 times and scored 12 goals, before leaving the club.

The big man’s destination was sure to be West Brom, until a last gasp call from Aidy Boothroyd secured his services despite having already passed a medical at the Baggies, and he moved to Vicarage Road for £1,600,000. It hasn’t been all plain sailing for Shittu, with his name causing people offence. He even admitted in an interview after his Blackpool debut "It has been tough settling in England, with people taking the mick out of my name, but I just want to get on with it now"

One thing is for sure, Pool fans hope he won’t come back to haunt them on this vital Championship deciding day.
