Way to go PT!
v Nottinghamshire LVCC1 @ Trent Bridge Wednesday 3 September 2008
Winning the toss seemed like a good start to this one. Choosing to bat also seemed sensible given the conditions at the time. But they soon changed, as did Somerset's fortunes!
Langer went into this one without the services of Neil Edwards replaced by the later batting expertise of Wes Durston. Other than that it was a line-up with few surprises. Steffan Jones missed out as Trescothick, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Trego, Kieswetter, Thomas, Caddick and Willoughby made up the eleven.
Losing the captain to a first ball duck as he expected movement which didn't come gave us the worst start and on a rain affected day we never really go a pair of batsmen in long enough to put a real partnership together. Zander deBruyn, Hildreth and Durston went for 10 between them and even the Mighty Marcus only reached the mid-thirties before falling to Adams.

Blackwell got into the 20's before Shreck got him

Pattinson took three - all caught behind and at one point we were 51 for 5 before Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego put something together to get us into 3 figures.
The rain broke up the afternoon and finished the day's play around the Tea interval with 143 on the board with 7 wickets down. Not a great position to go into Day 2 but it could have been worse I suppose.
We don't have this match by the sphericals I'm afraid but we must ensure we do not give the advantage to Notts on Thursday.
Day 2
So we need a big partnership...and that becomes even more important once Alfonso goes.

So Peter takes charge and with the help of a certain Andrew Caddick Somerset move over 200 and towards the next batting point target of 250. When Trigger finally goes at 241 we are so close and the big man nurses Willoughby over the gain line before we finish at 252. Great work gentlemen Well done.
Now all we need to do is get them in and get them out as quickly and as cheaply as possible. But that has to be done between the showers as the rain continues to affect the day.
Enter Charl with the cricketing weapon he does know how to work with - the ball. Jefferson and Adams get them to 40 and then he strikes... Both openers are dispatched by Willoughby in short order at that score; Jefferson caught behind and Adams caught Durston.
Another rain shortened day but they only have 8 wickets left and only 46 up at the end of it. We are still 300 runs ahead and a good spell tomorrow morning could still make this game interesting (and get us more bonus points). The Day 3 weather is no better than the first two if the forecast is to be believed but with luck it might hold off and these two sides may get a chance to make a game of this one.
Day 3 and 4
No chance at all. The rain came in and came down and nothing was possible on either day. We finish with a draw and stand 4 points behind Notts BUT with a game in hand and a home fixture against our rivals in third place Durham (Harmison and all) starting on Tuesday. The has to be the game that decides our season.
It is a game we have to win

Are you going to Hampshire next season Wurzel?

I too respect wurzel's right to his opinion, but with respect, they often tend to come across more as hobby-horses than considered opinions.
I am sure I am not alone in remembering that in recent years, when Blackwell was a regular in all of our teams, Wes Durston was wurzel's "favourite player", and the poster's signature has often featured his exclusion as a "cause celebre". Now that Dusrton's in, some may say at Blackwell's expense, the argument is reversed!
You can't select every one in the squad.
Edit: Please don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that I disagree with wurzel about any given issue. Just trying to point out that every decision has a consequence - every inclusion requires an exclusion, every high priority carries with it an implication that something else is of lower priority - every fielder placed is another fielder moved. That's life!

You have every right to contribute to this forum, Wurzel, and express your preferences for cricket, as well as your personal opinions as to how the cricket is played and indeed, how the club is run.
I do not necessarily agree with all the sentiments that you have expressed, but I would defend to the hilt your right to do so without being lampooned by others.
You have probably done more for Somerset C.C.C. than a number of other people by way of your membership of the Club, your membership and work for an Area Committee and above all else, your attendance at matches in order to support our team.
I applaud you for that, and am sorry that you have been the subject of some cheap and unnecessary jibes.

Please could our resident statistician post JL's last dozen, or so, scores?

Thank you for your kind words, Palairet. I don't believe I've been as kind to you, on occasion.
