Leaders Glaws face massive double challenge

Iain Balshaw - contract
By Cherry Picker May 1 2008
As that Scottish bloke who appears to be doing quite well as a football manager would say, it’s squeaky bum time. Guinness Premiership leaders Gloucester go into their last two games of the regular season knowing that their fate is in their own hands as they battle it out for a play-off place, preferably a repeat of last season's top spot.

But away to Wasps and at home to old rivals Bath are not the easiest of fixtures, and if Glaws do finish up on top of the table, nobody would be able to say they don’t deserve it after these two games.
They are at Wasps on Sunday then at home to Bath the following Saturday, May 10.
Meanwhile, there is mixed news off the pitch, with Iain Balshaw signing a contract which ties him to the club until 2010 and Mike Tindall charged with drink driving.
Balshaw told the club website: “I said when I joined Gloucester from Leeds that it was a place with massive potential and with the development the squad has gone through over the last 18 months, some outstanding signings and a fantastic structure, I am thrilled to have signed for another two years.
”The challenge is to constantly improve and be your best – we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what we can achieve and that is very exciting. The club is growing and I want to grow with it and take it as far as I can.”
Gloucester coach Dean Ryan added: “I have been delighted with Balsh’s contribution this season and I think we have seen the benefit of a really good pre-season and the confidence return to his game.
“He brings some outstanding attributes to our style of play. His running from deep provides a genuine cutting edge and his kicking game is excellent. I am really pleased a player of his quality has decided to stay with us for the long-term.
“We are on the cusp of something very special and to achieve it we need players of Iain’s quality.”

Wasps, meanwhile, will provide a huge challenge at Adam Park on Sunday.
Six points behind Glaws with a game in hand (v Newcastle Falcons), they have been one of the GP forms teams in recent weeks, and with home advantage they will be aiming to add the leaders’ scalp to their belts and to earn revenge for that single-point defeat at Kingsholm in January.

It’s going to be a cracker, and so is the finale against Bath six days later.

Tindall, meanwhile, has a fixture of his own when he is due to appear in court on May 14 after being pulled over by police on the M4.

Its come to this, two games to prove Glaws can walk the walk. After Sarries rolled over against Bath its imperative Glaws get something out of the trip to Wasps.
