Match Report: Walsall v Chester City

Dean Keates
By David Penniall March 11 2007
With Hartlepool United only managing a 1-1 draw against Lincoln City on Friday night, Walsall knew that if they managed to beat Chester City, the league leaders lead would be cut to just three points.

The Saddlers made just one change to the side that drew with Darlington last week, with club captain Michael Dobson coming into the side to replace striker Hector Sam which meant that long serving midfielder Darren Wrack played as an attacking midfielder.

With just 13th minutes on the clock, Chester should have taken the lead, after Chris Holroyd crossed a low ball in towards Lee Steele on the edge of the six-yard area, but the striker’s side-footed effort flied high and wide.

Chester City came into the game with hopes of battling for a point from this encounter, and shown early on that this was there aim with City defender Dave Artell launching in with a two-footed tackle on Darren Wrack, while the midfielder was receiving treatment however, a scuffle broke out between the two teams and after referee David Foster had calmed the sides down, Artell luckily just received a yellow card which angered The Saddlers faithful.  Five minutes later Hector Sam replaced later Wrack.

The Saddlers took the lead on the 67th minute when Chester's Laurence Wilson handled the ball inside the area after a Kevin Harper free-kick.  Midfielder Dean Keates then achieved a personal best of nine goals in a season with a blistering spot-kick to give Richard Money’s men three valuable points.

The Saddlers will now be looking to build on the three points they managed to pick up from this encounter with at least three or four points from there next two games, which are away games against Wycombe Wanderers and The MK Dons, on Saturday 17th and Sunday 25th respectively.
