Team News: Walsall v Hartlepool

Victoria Park
By David Penniall February 9 2007
Walsall make the long trip to Hartlepool tomorrow in search of 3 points against a side who are battling for promotion with The Saddlers. Hartlepool are the in form team going into this game, after a bad start to the season Hartlepool have won 12 of their last 14 games to move into the top three.
Defenders Anthony Gerrard and Ian Roper will be hoping to shake of knee and ankle injuries respectively to feature in this must win game. Both players have responded great to the treatment they have received this week and will be hoping their hard work pays off for them. If those two are fit, Walsall manager Richard Money will have a full squad to choose from with the exception of long term absence Allan Picken, but the Australian defender is on his way to recovery and came through 90 minutes of The Saddlers reserve team game against Barnsley, but is still not ready for first team action.

Chris Westwood returns to his former club, where he is still highly regarded, despite scoring for The Saddlers when they last visit to Victoria Park as the two teams drew 1-1 in August 2005. Meanwhile, January signing Geordie Lyall will be hoping to make at least the bench for the first time on Saturday and youngster Mark Bradly will also be hoping to break into The Saddlers 16 man squad after putting in an impressive display for the Welsh Under-21 team in midweek, where the Saddlers youngster came on as a second half substitute.

Danny Wilson's, Harlepool who has I said before are in form and sitting 3rd in the table, and with a good home record, winning nine in their fifth teen games they have played at Victoria Park ad conceding just eight in the process which is just one more than Walsall.

Hartepool United have gone 12 games since their last defeat when Macclesfield knocked them out the cup and they haven’t lost at home in League 2 since Barnet took three points of them with a 1-0 victory at Victoria Park.

The North East side go into the game after an impressive 1-0 victory last weekend against another of their promotion rivals Swindon Town, where they were without £80,000 signing Richie Barker through suspension. The former Mansfield Town man has already got 16 goals to his name and will be hoping to return to the Hartlepool set up.
