Following the award of the prestigious Cricket Writers Young Player of the Year and the Award of Yorkshire Player of the Season in Four Day Cricket by the fans site The Corridor of Uncertainty, Adil Rashid has picked up another of cricket’s most sought after awards.
The 19 year old has been named Professional Cricketers Association Young Player of the Year.  In the County Championship in 2007 he scored 790 runs at 46.47 (best of 108) and took 46 wickets at 39.45 (best of 7 for 169).  Rashid also made his first appearance for England Lions.  He has been widely tipped to gain selection for England’s tour to Sri-Lanka although an ‘A’ team tour is looks more likely.

I posted the following after the pre-season interview with Adil, where he set out his targets for the year:

800-900 runs and 50 wickets.

To put his 800-900 run 50 wicket target in context: No Yorkshire spinner has taken more than 40 championship wickets in a season for over a decade (I think Stemp took 41 in 91 or 92), and the following are what some great Yorkshire all-rounders of the past would have returned from a 16 match season, based on thier end of career stats for the club.

G.Hirst 715 runs, 55 wickets
W.Rhodes 563 runs, 65 wickets
R.Illingworth 483 runs, 46 wickets
B.Close 676 runs, 29 wickets
S. Haigh 343 runs, 58 wickets
F.S. Jackson 802 runs, 39 wickets

So 800-900 runs and 50 wickets would put young Adil pretty high up that list. (of course these targets may be for all cricket this coming season rather than just CC)

In 15 matches this season he managed 790 runs and 40 wickets.

As always excellent research ks. Its interesting to be able to compare him to past greats and the stats seem to show what a very special talent we have here.

As I've said elsewhere Rashid's figures are extra special as there has been 'second season blues' with Adil's bowling AND it's been a wet summer which tends to count against spinners.

Whilst I don't think Kenny's research actually says very much, what with the massive differences in the game over time, not least the differences between the and four day cricket and the covering of pitches. However, I do think that Rashid's stats this year are quite impressive - I say quite because the one thing I do note is that his wickets have been extremely expensive in the end, perhaps as a result of tiredness or of the wet summer, and for it to be a "perfect" year I would have preferred an average closer to 30.

One of the best ways to judge a players worth is in comparison to his fellow team mates. I could have produced a list detailing the X percent of the teams runs and Y percent of wickets taken during the games they played. But to be honest, I think I've done my fair share of work producing stats as a discussion point for the board. Feel free to knock yourself out producing that list yourself.

As for Rashid's season average - yes, far higher than you'd want. But the same goes for all spinners this season, in particular leggies. The English qualified spinners in Div 1 this season took 200 wickets @ 42.46. The leggies in that number taking 67 @ 45.34. The experienced overseas pros faired far better, taking 296 wickets @ 25.85. So if those stats tell us anything, perhaps it's that Rashid is already a better than average English spinner, but a long way yet from being a Bradford version of Mushy or Shane Warne. Something I suspect we already knew.
