Cricket - Bermuda Short Of Class
By Dave Tickner March 12 2007
While the England bowlers no doubt enjoyed their gentle workout against Bermuda, it highlighted the significant gulf that exists not only between the Test nations and the rest, but also between some of the associate members.

While the likes of Kenya, Scotland and Ireland possess a number of players with first-class experience, Bermuda's only first-class cricketer is 36-year-old Glamorgan journeyman David Hemp.

A quick look at Bermuda's record does little to boost the World Cup debutants' hopes.

In their limited ODI experience, dating back only to last year, Bermuda have lost 14 of the 19 games they've played, and only one of those was against Test-playing opposition. And that was Bangladesh.

They were shot out for just 106 by the might of Canada's bowling in the ICC World Cricket League.

And England's attack never got out of second gear as the minnows were bundled out for a paltry 45 inside 23 overs.

Unfortunately for Irvine Romaine and his team, it could well be a sign of things to come over the next couple of weeks as they try to adapt to the massive jump in standard.

Add the fact that Bangladesh - easily the strongest of the eight also-rans as they showed in their first warm-up clash against New Zealand - are alongside India and Sri Lanka in Bermuda's section, and Blue Square's stand-out 9/4 that they post the lowest total of the tournament can't be ignored, especially with some firms offering no better than evens.

The ease with which England accounted for their limited opposition on Monday left captain Michael Vaughan admitting he is still unsure who will be in his bowling attack when the tournament starts, with Liam Plunkett, James Anderson, Saj Mahmood and Jon Lewis all competing for two places alongside Andrew Flintoff in the pace department.

So while there are some tempting prices around about England's bowling exploits - notably Paddy Power's 8/1 that Jon Lewis takes England's first wicket of the tournament - we'll pass at this point.

But Vaughan seems more convinced about his batting line-up, and that does offer us a few decent betting opportunities.

Speaking after the Bermuda game, Vaughan said of the batting order: "That's what we've gone with for this match and, unless things dramatically change over the next few days, that's what we'll be going with for the game against Australia.

"The batting seems more settled than the bowling at the minute."

It seems inconceivable that England would change things between the Australia game and the first game of the tournament proper, so that should mean Ed Joyce gets the nod at the top of the order.

And that makes Stan James' 6/4 that the Dublin-born opener outscores Ireland's top-scorer in the group games appealing.

Not only is Joyce a class above any of his erstwhile team-mates, despite the presence of promising youngsters Eoin Morgan and William Porterfield in the Irish ranks, he also has two games against lesser opponents while Ireland have only one.

For after the opener against New Zealand, Joyce faces the less demanding attacks of Canada and Kenya.

But Ireland open against Zimbabwe before taking on Pakistan and West Indies. Even with Pakistan's current bowling problems, theirs is still a far superior attack to Kenya's.

Were Joyce still playing for Ireland, then 6/4 for him to lead their scoring charts would seem more than fair. Given the presence of better-quality batsmen around him and the lower quality of bowling he'll face across the three games and it begins to look very generous indeed.

As well as easing Joyce's fears, Vaughan's comments would also appear to confirm Ian Bell's place at number three in the order, making the in-form Warwickshire batsman a cracking bet to score England's first 50 of the tournament at 7s with William Hill.

Bell has two half-centuries in his last four ODIs and looked in good order against Bermuda. The rich promise of his early days is now maturing into genuine top-class talent.

And crucially for this bet, he scores his runs at a quicker rate than the likely openers, with a strike-rate of 70.22 runs per 100 balls against Vaughan's 68.48 and Joyce's 65.56.

And that gives him a cracking chance of taking out this bet in the first game should a wicket fall early.

The third England batsman to get with should come as no surprise; Kevin Pietersen is arguably the most destructive force in one-day cricket when he gets going.

And Blue Square look to be takinga risk by offering the South Africa-born star at odds against in a tournament-long runs match bet with Sachin Tendulkar.

While the little master's recent form suggests reports of his demise have been exaggerated, there is no doubt he no longer carries the same aura he once did.

Even taking his recent good form into account, over his last 15 ODIs Tendulkar's scored just 417 runs at an average a shade over 32. Pietersen in the same period has 160 runs more at an average approaching 45.

Both players must play at least six matches for the bet to stand, so we'll get our stake back should either man get injured early on or see his side crash out at the first stage.

Moving away from England, we like the look of Totalbet's 6/5 against the leading runscorer in the tournament being left-handed.

While there are two big flashing warning lights marked 'Pietersen' and 'Ponting', names like Sangakkara, Smith, Gayle, Ganguly, Jayasuriya, Gilchrist, Hayden, Lara, Hussey and Chanderpaul are enough to convince us to get involved.

Indeed, a quick look at the betting for top runscorer reveals a market admittedly led by the right-handed Ponting, but featuring seven southpaws in the top ten.

A GUARANTEED PROFIT ON THURSDAY'S UEFA CUP

Blackburn's conquerors Bayer Leverkusen travel to France on Thursday night for a 6.00pm UK Time kick off and we can guarantee you a profit on the match, whatever the result.

We must point out that if you want to take this bet, you should do it now - don't delay! - because we expect the odds to change before kick-off which means the figures here will be invalidated. If they have changed, let us know and we will rework the bet for you.

You won't be able to do this if you already have accounts with one or more of the bookies we are using for this bet but if that is the case, mail us and let us know which accounts you have and we'll send you an alternative bet.

We're going to lay out a total of £135.00 on the Lens v Bayer Leverkusen match and we will collect £167.68 plus £50.00 in free bets if the game is drawn in ninety minutes. If either team wins after ninety minutes we will get all of our money back plus £50.00 in free bets.

Here's how it's done. Just follow these simple instructions.

1. Open accounts with Premier Bet and Gambling AffiliationUnibet and Victor Chandler. This shouldn't take you any longer than ten minutes.

2. Make the following deposits into your new accounts. Deposit £47.50 into your new Premier Bet account. Deposit £20.00 into your new Gambling AffiliationUnibet account. Deposit £67.50 into your new Victor Chandler account.

3. Now make the following bets.

Place £47.50 on the draw at 3.20 (11/5) with Premier Bet.

Place £20.00 on Bayer Leverkusen at 3.90 (23/8) with Gambling AffiliationUnibet

Gambling AffiliationUnibet pay a bonus on your first deposit, 100% matched up to £20.00 so when you make your £20.00 deposit, you will automatically receive another £20.00 in your account. Place the £20.00 bonus on Bayer Leverkusen as well. You now have £40.00 staked on Bayer Leverkusen.

Place £67.50 on Lens at 1/1 with Victor Chandler.

You have temporarily laid out a total of £135.00. I stress, temporarily... Now sit back, crack a beer open and enjoy the match.

4. Here's what happens at the end of the game.

If it's a draw in ninety minutes, you will collect £167.68 from Premier Bet.

Premier Bet pay a bonus on your first bet if it's a winner, tiered according to the odds - 15% in this case - so if it's a draw in ninety minutes, you collect the following:

£104.50 winnings plus a 15% bonus of £15.68 plus your £47.50 stake back which equals £167.68.

If Bayer win in ninety minutes, you will collect £135.00 from Gambling AffiliationUnibet. The breakdown of the £135.00 is as follows:

£57.50 winnings plus £57.50 winnings from the bet you placed with your deposit bonus plus your £20.00 stake back which equals £135.00.

If Lens win in ninety minutes you will collect £135.00 from Victor Chandler.

Victor Chandler will then credit your new account with £50.00 in free bets, whatever the result of the match.

5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Lens v Bayer Leverkusen match is no draw at ninety minutes and you gain £50.00 in free bets. But if it is a draw after ninety minutes, you will make £32.68 profit plus £50.00 in free bets.

6. It is absolutely vital that you click on the links on this page to open the accounts with the three bookies or you may not qualify for the bonuses.

Also, before you place your bets, you should check that the odds haven't changed. If they have, let us know and we will rework the bet for you.

Also, please note that the bonuses and free bets and bonuses from Victor Chandler and Premier Bet are not always paid immediately and you may have to wait until Friday before they hit your accounts.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions at all about this bet and we will come straight back to you.

Please note that the free bets and bonuses are valid for new customers only so if you already have an account with one or more of the bookies we are using, you won't be able to do this. If that is the case, contact us and we'll mail you an alternative bet using different bookies.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only once has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
