The Premiership is just around the corner but for a number of shrewd punters the real profits are made in the lower leagues and with kick off now upon us it is worth looking at where the money is going and why.

The final day of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday features the Group 1 Vodafone Nassau Stakes. Frankie Dettori is back on board favourite Ouija Board after Christophe Soumillon encountered some traffic problems on her in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown last time. She will not have it all her own way, however, as Jim Bolger sends his multiple Group 1-winning globe-trotting mare, Alexander Goldrun, over from Ireland. She was all out to beat Chelsea Rose in the Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh on Irish Derby weekend on her latest run, and just to add extra interest, Chelsea Rose is also in the Nassau line-up. The Classic generation is represented by Coronation Stakes winner Nannina and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Race For The Stars.

In the Vodafone Stewards Cup, the big spring handicap on the card, Firenze is on a recovery mission after her unlucky run to finish second to Baltic King in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot. She is up five pounds for that run, but will still take all the beating. Prices on all the weekend's racing are now available.

The Premiership is just around the corner but for a number of shrewd punters the real profits are made in the lower leagues and with kick off now upon us it is worth looking at where the money is going and why.

Unsurprisingly, betting prominence in The Championship is given to last seasons three Premiership sides with Birmingham City currently favourites. Matched at a high on Betdaq of 7.5, The Blues are now 6.0 to back and lay after the recent acquistions made by manager Steve Bruce and the loan deal for Arsenal duo Fabrice Muamba and Sebastian Larsson which may prove inspirational. The fact that the manager's son Alex has moved to Ipswich will be seen as a positive in some quarters as the club's owners will be demanding re-entry into the top flight at the first time of asking. It will require absolute focus from Bruce to get the job done. Best backed team to win the league are Bryan Robson's West Brom side who having touched 10.0 briefly now sit solidly as 6.5 chances with every prospect of becoming the new favourites. Close inspection of The Baggies squad reveals a team well equipped to deal with the physical side of the game in addition to being packed with players full of character. West Brom's best business in pre-season has been in keeping hold of their elite players Curtis Davies and Tomasz Kuszczak and a bold bid for the title looks likely. Sunderland are the mystery side with Niall Quinn now in charge and backed by new Irish investors. A lack of signings and the loss of Julio Arca is a concern though and even rumours of signing Quinn's former mercurial strike partner Kevin Phillips has not prevented Betdaq traders forcing the Black Cats out to 11.0.

There appears to be little confidence in the bigger clubs to progress this season with Leeds United out from 10.0 to 12.0, Crystal Palace from 13.0 to 15.0 and alarmingly Wolverhampton Wanderers from 15.0 to 27.0 where the appointment of Mick McCarthy has failed to tickle the fancy of exchange users. Southhampton though are a side who can expect improvement if money talks. Traded in from 15.0 to 10.0, George Burley has dealt well in pre-season with the signing of Czech Republc midfielder Rudi Skacel a major bonus as well as class cat Kelvin Davis. Bullish noises from St Mary's are justified and they look a strong trading option as decent looks assured for Saints backers.

There are 3 live matches from the Championship this weekend, with Luton V Leicester on Saturday, while Coventry V Sunderland and Derby V Southampton on Sunday. All games are live on Sky Sports.

After a strong finish which nearly saw them into the Playoffs, Nottingham Forest are jollies to win Coca Cola League One at 5.5 but Colin Calderwood looks in store for a pressure filled season in charge at the City Ground with such a high wage bill and a better trading decision surely lies with Bristol City. In Gary Johnson the Robins have a manager going places and some excellent signings combined with a large fan base and strong preseason make them look solid on Betdaq at 6.0 from 7.0. Swansea will carry the hopes of many after going close to promotion last year but have drifted out to 15.0 on the exchange as support has dried up and more value may lie with potential dark horses Blackpool who currently trade at 31.0. Foreign investment may mean a significant transfer budget for the seasiders which can only help in this most competitive of leagues.

With a long season ahead it will almost certainly pay dividends to monitor price fluctuations following each round of games via the Betdaq website. Volatile odds are guaranteed and value will be had by those traders willing to work that little bit harder in the leagues where there is a lack of betting expertise.

Australian coach John Connolly has added extra muscle to his side for Saturday s Test match against South Africa after handing giant flanker Wycliff Palu his first Test start. Connolly has also recalled hooker Tai McIsaac to his starting XV to face the meaty Springbok pack in their Tri-Nations clash in Sydney.

After their narrow loss against New Zealand next week, Australia will be looking to bounce back against the side they thrashed 49-0 in their last series meeting. Veteran hooker Jeremy Paul has made way for McIsaac while Scott Fava has dropped out to bring in NSW Waratahs giant Palu. George Gregan captains The Wallabies for the 56th time, beating John Eales record, while Phil Waugh earns his 50th cap. South Africa coach Jake White however will be desperate for his side to avenge their record 49-0 drubbing at the hands of Australia earlier in this campaign.

White has made two changes to his starting line-up in what is a must-win game for the visitors with his job hanging in the balance. Winger Akona Ndungane is back in the starting side in place of Breyton Paulse, while lock Johann Muller has added extra muscle to the scrum in replacing Albert van den Berg. Teenage hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle will make his debut off the bench, but White is still without injured stars such as Schalk Burger, Bakkies Botha, Jean de Villiers and Andre Pretorious.

The build up to this encounter took a twist on Monday last when South Africa were left outraged after being forced into an eleventh hour overhaul of their training preparations. The Springboks had been set for a workout at the St George Illawara Dragons Jubilee Stadium, but the Australian Rugby Union informed them of the facility s sudden unavailability just two hours before they were due to arrive. As a result, Jake White s men have had to formulate their bid for a first Tri-Nations victory on what they deemed the barely adequate facilities of Hansen Park, much to the discontent of the entire traveling party.

You can get with Australia in this match at 1.15 or lay them at 1.16 while South Africa are available to back at 8.1 and to lay at 8.5. On the Handicap market Australia (-15.5) points are 2.02 while South Africa (+15.5) points are available at 1.92. This game is live on Sky Sports Xtra on Saturday morning from 11:00.

England captain Andrew Strauss has warned against complacency as his side prepare to take on Pakistan in the third Test at Headingley on Friday. The home side romped to victory inside three days at Old Trafford last week, re-igniting English cricket s feel good factor following a disappointing first half of the summer, but Strauss is insistent that the hard work is still ahead for an England side that is just rediscovering the winning habit.

England look unlikely to drop Monty Panesar following the spinner s eight wickets at Old Trafford, but Strauss refused to confirm that the battle for the final bowling spot is between Jon Lewis and Sajid Mahmood. Strauss has also warned his side to be wary of a Pakistan backlash following the tourists humiliation in Manchester last week. Prices on the third test are currently available.

Golf

The US PGA tour returned to the big time this week with the 2006 Buick Open. Mike Weir leads the pack after firing a nine-under-par 63 on a weather-affected day one at Michigan's Warwick Hills Country Club yesterday. World number three Vijay Singh follows Weir, entering today s play at -8 while the Open Champion and favourite Tiger Woods remains in contention after finishing his first round with a six under par score of 66.

The European tour is back in Sweden this weekend with the Scandinavian Masters from Barseback on the outskirts of Malmo. A surprisingly weak field has gathered for the €1.6 million event with the Swedish stars of the tour taking centre stage, headed by dual runner-up Henrik Stenson. Former US Open champion Michael Campbell leads the much-reduced international challenge and the forecast wet weather could play into his hands, provided he finds the form that has so far eluded him in 2006. Prices on both these tour events are available.

Formula 1

Fernando Alonso's championship aspirations seem to be falling from his grasp with every race, and with little chance to catch his breath after a lacklustre German GP, the Spaniard goes to Hungary with Michael Schumacher looking perilously over his shoulder. Alonso's four race winning streak seems a distant memory now, and with Schumacher's recent successes cutting Alonso's championship lead cut by 14 points in just three races, the momentum is most certainly with both Schumacher and Ferrari. The race to the finish line in one of the closest F1 seasons in many years begins this Sunday in Eastern Europe. Prices on both these tour events are available.
