LGWT's a World Cup winner at O'Connells
By LGWT November 5 2007
South Africa (our pre-season guests) having defeated our near neighbours to win the Rugby World Cup 2007, LGWT recounts (as best he can under the circumstances) a memorable evening in the Independent Connacht Rugby Supporters pub of choice O'Connells...

Well the World Cup Final may have been a tight tense affair but the same cannot be said for the RWC final party in O'Connell's that evening. Owner Pat Lonergan made sure that rugby fans had a night to remember (if they could!) in the Official ICRSC Supporters Pub.

All through the competition the staff and customers had competed fiercely against one another in a fantasy mini-league ran through scrum.com. One lucky, or shrewd, team selector would be picking up the prize that night in a winner-take-all box off between the two front runners.

O'Connell's regular customers of hard core Connacht Rugby fans were invited to watch the match in the back room which had been sectioned off for that purpose. Laid out on the old AGA range was an array of top quality food with dishes such as Irish stew, Scottish smoked salmon, New Zealand lamb shanks, South African tiger prawns and a selection of French and Italian cheese and meats served to represent the participating nations. Reinforcing the international flavour were wines from Argentina, Australia, England, France, New Zealand and South Africa. All free of charge on this special night for O'Connell's patrons. Additionally champagne was flowing before the match as the two white shirted England fans were presented with their glasses prior to kick off - Pat stating that they may have little to celebrate after 80 minutes of rugby had elapsed!

By no means though was the fun restricted to the regular customers. All in attendance in O'Connell's were treated to free burgers and hot dogs fresh off the barbie in the rear beer garden. Chef Paddy estimating that he fed 80-100 hungry rugby followers. To round it all off those who felt peckish later on that evening were refilled with T-bone steaks done just the way you like them. Yours truly was too thirsty for his but collected it the following afternoon when popping in for the cure. Along with the steak Pat threw in the spicy meatballs and sausages that were left over. Having removed the need to go shopping for a couple of days we were free to while away the afternoon discussing what will have to go down as truly one of the great nights out of the year. Our fantasy league selections may have differed but on this we were all in agreement.

Oh, and the fantasy league must have been down to luck as this correspondent bagged the prizes. Not a bad auld evening at all.

See you all in O'Connell's after our home matches.

Enjoy O'Connell's Sensibly

This place sounds fantastic. It's my first port of call when us Falcons play your bunch on Dec 7th.

We look forward to welcoming all Falcons who are flying over. I have fond memories of everything except the match when we visited Newcastle last time. Especially the barbie that was laid on pre-match in Gosforth. See you next month and good luck at the weekend...no bonus points please!cool smiley

Likewise: the bunch of Connacht fans who were in the back of our South Stand were an absolute credit to the team. Always singing, flying their enormo-flags and a pleasure to have some banter with.

Be the best bar ever if it stayed open for the Hatton fight ! would you be up for that Doc?

I'd be up for it myself but given the fight time (do you know what time? I presume three-ish) our licensing laws would prohibit Pat keeping the bar open. I'll snoop about for alternatives between here and the match. It's a pay-per-view event.
Proposal: If the fight could be recorded (could be legal issues here - need to check that) by somebody and reshown - say at midday the following day before anyone hears the result would this be a halfway house that could be okay? Want to sort you guys out with something and being a member of the fancy myself I'm looking at the options.

Working on it Steve1888.

That would be LDTT and his merry men, I joined them at the end for a "last stand" as the stand cleared out.....

Steve we'd all drink all night if it wasn't for the law - or those pesky kids!(Sm6)

My investigations have revealed that Sky Sports has it and it is a pay-per-view. Not sure about reshowing times. Will chat to a couple of lads over the weekend for intel.

By the way if you missed Calzaghe v Kessler last weekend it on BBC1 at 13.10 on Saturday, enjoy.(Sm110)

Fraid not, think Murdoch's F*ckwits have have it exclusively...

Setanta did the Calzage fight though and have been repeating it all this week. Watched it live, a good but not great fight. The Dane was strong but a bit limited, and Joe made harder work of it than he should have...

Again - most appreciated sir!

and yeah I stayed up and watched the Calzaghe fight too - long session it was but then again that's what weekends are for.

Decent fight and comfortable performance from Calzaghe.

The last Hatton fight was on Setanta so pity this one isn't.
