Heidfeld penalized with 3 spot loss after Quali
By BMW Sauber F1 Team September 27 2008
Nick Heidfeld has been given a three-place grid demotion penalty for blocking Rubens Barrichello during Q1. That means Heidfeld will start from 9th place instead of 6th. The incident happened when Heidfeld was entering the pits, while Barrichello was ending his flying lap.

And what is more surprising is that in the other hadn Barrichello has been fined with 10.000€ for not using the deceleration zone when diving into the pits after being slowed down by Heidfeld.

As it was feared, the Singapore pit lane entry problem has not being solved yet, despite yesterday's modification, which meant a change in the line separating the racing track to the pit entry.

I hope BMW will appeal because this looks like most stupid verdict of the year - which is quite an achievement.

Yeah, hope so too.

I'm amazed by the ability of FIA to invent new rules and penalties. SInce when there is a 3 place demotion? Wasn't it either 5 place loss of the best quali times removed?

Makes no sense, especially after all the complains about the pitlane entry and exit. In fact Nick had no place to go.

The penalty should go to Tilke, who designed the circuit.

Sorry, no appeal here.

Another reason not to like FIA proceedings.

Wait, it says "practice sessions", not quali or race (which probably would be called in another way). Or does the word practice include quali?

I can't see how Heidfeld can be penalized either. Even if he had held the car tight to the inside of the circuit, Barrichello's line would have still been compromised.

As for the rule that was quoted, the interesting part is that it should have been applied to Trulli's infraction for driving against traffic on Friday, rahter than the fine which was imposed.

seems fia wants to look impartial so it slaps penalties left, right and centre... (then again justice is blind, isn't she?)

regards tt

After watching the video I would say the penalty was right. Nick had enough time on the straight before the last corner to see Honda in his mirrors.

Of course it doesn't change the fact, that the pit entry should be redesigned.

Re: Heidfeld penalized with 3 spot loss after Quali
Three more cars to pass is what it boils down to being.
At this stage lady luck will take over. Three places back may or may not work for him. If there is a first turn mess up he may avoid it. If it happens further back, he's could be toast.
If it rains, who's to say.
Does the three grid penalty allow him the privilege of changing his fuel load ?
At any rate its a pi$$ off that tends to deflate ones moral, but knowing Nick's consistency he'll bring her home. The big question, will it be in the points ?

Fingers crossed, Sessions
