Kubica and BMW Sauber get 1st win ever! Nick 2nd!
By BMW Sauber F1 Team
June 8 2008
Robert Kubica secured victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, thus fulfilling the major goal of the BMW Sauber F1 Team for this Formula One season. Nick Heidfeld made it a one-two victory by finishing second in sensational style. .
Both drivers delivered a perfect performance and achieved the best result in the history of the young team.

In the final third of the race, Robert defended his lead in superb style, while Nick managed to keep third-placed David Coulthard (Red Bull) at bay. With this result, Robert takes the lead in the Drivers' Championship. The BMW Sauber F1 Team needed just seven races in this year's World Championship to reach its goal, to win a Grand Prix.

We will bring you a full report of the Canadian Grand Prix shortly.

I can not tell you how happy I am for you guys. VERY WELL DONE!!!

As a life long McLaren fan, I've seen many victories and more than my fair share of 1-2's.

I tell you this: For you guys, I ran out to my driveway and hammered the horn of my BMW in salut for 30 seconds.

Congratulations. It's been a long time coming.

Parminio

got that right! you know what i think? nick was told to let kubica pass him. knowing how nick is on the track, he is one of the hardest drivers to be overtaken. alonso couldnt do it to the point he crashed out trying. if nick held his position, he would have probably won the race. not to take anything away from kubica, i'm happy for him he won but i think nick could have gotten his first win today.

Hi Guys,

Congratulations to your team and drivers on an awesome result.
BMW and Peter Sauber must be thrilled!!!!

BMW is my favourite production car. I'm onto my 4th one and loving it....about time they got a win......last time it was with a 1,5L V6 turbo that has something like 1300bhp...Nelson Piquet snr did the honours.....BMW build the best engines and it's beginning to show.......

Congrats again.

Cheers

Completly agree with you! So dissapointed that nick didn't win, but of course i am happy for robert and the team.
Nick also managed to do more laps on the softer tyres than anyone else and he managed to keep it on the road where others failed. A great 2nd place and a great win for Kubica.
I just hope BMW can be as strong at other races.

Nick might have been able to hold off Robert, but it would have cost BMW a 1-2 finish as Robert would have found himself behind Coulthard after the final pitstop. Great job by both of them.

BMW had to let Robert through. He was much faster than Nick and would have tried to pass him, which could have resulted in an accident between teamates. Letting Robert through didn't automatically mean a win for Robert. Nick just had to stay within 1 second of Robert's lap time and he would have stayed ahead and won. The faster guy won, as it should be.

Nick said after the race that he made it easy on RK. RK believed it was a real pass.

I don'think Nick would've been able to hold off RK for RK's entire 2nd stint anyway (RK was 2.5 to 3 sec fasterat the time) so I don't think Coulthard represented a real threat to the 1-2. But Nick certainly could've cost RK enough time to retake the lead when RK stopped again, then we would've seen some real tensiona and intrigue on the pit wall...

I couldn't come online as I didn't have internet connection. Congratulations to all my fellow BMW Sauber friends on this board for such an excellent 1-2 yesterday in Canada. I couldn't sleep all night because of that sheer happiness in me and I'm so thrilled to investigate about that win deeply with you all.

YES !!!

BIG CONGRATS to ALL the BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM on a job
WELL DONE!

F1 History was written today:

1. First WIN for the BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM
2. First 1-2 WIN for the BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM
3. First F1 WIN for driver ROBERT KUBICA
4. First F1 WIN for a POLISH driver

Some say that this 1-2 win was "lucky" or "inherited"...

A RACE is NOT A QUALY, sometimes the FASTEST make MISTAKES
(even when driving slowly) and LOOSE, while the NOT-SO FAST
DON'T and WIN !!!...In this case being SAFE & SMART proved way better than being QUICK & "NOT-SO SMART"

Thats right. They did the best thing for the team.

And afterall, with a very similar car, but with much less fuel, RK would have overtaken Nick sooner or later anyway. So Nick was very intelligent and let Robert pass.

yeah but then when alonso crashed out, the race was totally at their discretion. my point is, if i showed some teammanship, i should expect some to. if it was up to nick, we would have held everyone up and won the race. my feeling is, the strategy is for kubica to win. coulthard isnt even an issue. he was way out. alonso was their concern until he lost it.

exactly, coz nick was left to fend off alonso that why he couldnt keep pace compared to kubica clean air ahead.

Well, I also remember hearing some people saying on Saturday that Robert came up 2nd because he's lighter than Kimi and Hamilton. Well was that true? I don't think so as the 1st pit-stop proved they're wrong. (Sm100)

As for that lucky 1-2 like they pretend, they're free to say whatever they like but Robert pitted on the same lap as Kimi and Hamilton did but came out out 1st waiting for the green light. Shouldn't have the accident happened and should have Robert continued to deliver aggressively, I think he would have stayed 1st after the 2nd pit-stop.

What about Massa's performance compared to the slowest Beemer (Nick Heidfeld)? Do they also have excuses?

I forgot to give my point about Nick and Robert. Nick is a gentleman. I also believe from the angle I've seen the move from Robert on him, that Nick did in fact make things easier on Robert, firstly by turning wide, secondly by breaking a bit earlier than usual.
