PsyM Reviews The Italian GP
By PsyM September 11 2007
PsyM's review of the 2007 Italian Grand Prix held at Monza, where the BMW Sauber F1 Team scored nine valuable points by finishing in 4th and 5th positions. In doing so, the team strengthened its hold of 3rd place in the Constructors' Championship.

First of all this is always a race with mixed emotions for me, and I'm sure it is the same for many other Swedish F1 fans. 29 years ago exactly today (1978-09-11) our biggest F1-star, Ronnie Peterson, was killed in a horrifying accident.
The accident happened right at the start of the Grand Prix, and a lot cars were involved. Peterson's car hit the barrier and caught fire. Several people including f1-driver James Hunt rescued Peterson from the burning car.  However, by this point he had already broken his legs and feet in many places and was burned on his arms and shoulders. The situation was not seen as life threatening. Ronnie was conscius the whole time and he even managed to talk with the doctors.
After the operation though, things got worse. An embolism had entered Ronnie's lungs, and the lungs could no longer support his body with oxygen causing his inner organs to shut down.......

A video of the accident is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wk7uSuWPkE
and more info about Ronnie Peterson is found on http://www.ronniepeterson.se where English is available.

Now Back to the 2007 race!

It was a weekend where Alonso dominated from the beginning. Apart from the first friday session, he was fastest in all the practice sessions.
All weekend his face was shinning with great confidence and when it mattered the most he delivered without ever beeing threatened. It was a great victory for Alonso and McLaren, with Hamilton in second.
The 18 points they collected was the 'Game, Set and Match' of this year's Constructors' championship, I reckon. McLaren are too far ahead for Ferrari to catch up, their only chance is if the Spy saga ends with a severe McLaren Penalty.
The Driver's championship is a battle between Alonso and Hamilton, only 3 points separate them.  Apart from them, I cannot see anyone else winning the title.  Of course Räikkönen and Massa still have a theoretical chance but it´s minimal. In the end I think Alonso will once again be champion. He knows the final tracks (apart from Fuji) and he has been in this situation before, and that will prove decisive.

The BMW-Sauber drivers did a good job as usual, with Nick taking his 5th 4th-place of the year.
Robert had a harder race due to (in my opinion) clumsy mechanics who dropped the car during the first pitstop . Later Robert took part of the blame due to that he came in the pits in a angle.... In my mind the pitcrew should be so professional that they can handle such a situation without dropping the car...
Still, he clawed his way back, taking Kovalainen in the second stop and then overtaking Rosberg with a fine move.
9 points for the team and we are firmly in 3rd place!

The weekend to come I am really looking forward to. The Belgian Grand Prix is back on the calendar again. Due to the changeable weather and the characteristics of the circuit I think we will be heading for an exiting weekend!

Regards

Peter a.k.a PsyM

Re: PsyM Reviews The Italian GP
Good summary Psym, enjoyed the preface on Ronnie Peterson, I hope F1 does a better job of remembering him next year for the 30th anniversary.

Ronnie, just like Gilles, cared more about winning races than collecting points for the championship...

Ditto.

Same feelings for me. And about the race and the championship this season too.

Looking forward to the magnificent return of Spa!(Sm15)
