But All Is Not Lost....
By John P October 17 2005
I saw an interview with a former player on television over the weekend, after the Spurs game, and I felt horrified at what he said. As the more than average former player was sat in a cosy little studio giving his opinion on our club.

Yes the results are a bit frustrating to the fans because we all know what they are capable of. Yes the club will and can get out of this situation. And yes David is the right man for the job.

There is a bad psychological effect caused by the abismal referring during the Champions League game against Villareal but a once great referee. Some players took the defeat to heart more than others, which is completely understandable as we all know this is grand old team to play for. But now that ill effect has spread like Avian flu through the ranks at Goodison. What's the cure? Take 2 minutes to look back on last season, take 2 hands and pull your socks up and plenty of exercise to plug away in the matches. Eventually the goals will come, as will the results. We have re-inforced the squad from last year with some quality purchases, and in time this will become clear.

The Spurs game was a lot more than just a defeat. It was damage limitation. Last year we took a 5-2 battering so some would say that this was acheived. If Yobo had not have made that mistake, like he did against Manchester United, we would have been in a far better situation. But if it wasnt for Yobo on the pitch they would have acheived the 5 goals. Valente is improving with each game. It is hard for an european passing left back to come into a hard fast paced league and to fit into the league and the squad is what Nuno is doing. Mateo Ferrari has been getting played all over the back 4 so its hard for him to feel settled but the player is quality. But the test of time has caught up to our once invaluable defender David Weir. Stubbs caused trouble off the pitch but brought out the best in Weir through out the seaon. But next to a fast paced defender like Yobo, David keeps getting caught out and left exposed by strikers tricks of the trade.

The midfield needs a rejuvenated Cahill to spearhead our attack. 2 years of non stop football is clear when you see his performances now and last season. My mine gripes are with Simon Davies, as he floats in and out of games and Kevin Kilbane, who seems half the player he was last year. But the return of Lee Carsley and Van Der Meyde would add more solidity to the midfield eventually when they return from injury, along with TUN Man of last Month of Mikel Arteta.

The sooner Mr Beattie comes back to fitness and plays week in week out then the sooner we can start our season and get into the top half of the table like we deserve. Until the next transfer window, James is our only goal hungry striker. Marcus and Duncan are great handymen to cause defenders trouble but when it comes to goalscoring they are left standing.

Our next game is against the awesome Chelsea, Nil Satis Nisi Optimum boys!
