Smith struck on the hour mark when breaking clear of his marker before slotting the ball past Rovers on-loan goalkeeper Richard Lee to give the Wanderers something to shout about in their final second string game of the 2005-2006 campaign.
The game was fiercly contested and this was to show very early on when Bolton midfielder Leslie Thompson had to leave the field through injury in the opening quarter of an hour.
Rovers midfielder Jerome Watt had the first clear cut chance of the game just after half time but Bolton's impressive Polish goalkeeper Przemyslaw Kazmierzczak was quick to tip the ball to safety.
American youth international Smith put the visitors in the driving seat to continue his recent hot streak in front of goal midway through the second half but it could have so easily have been all square soonafter had Raffaele De Vita and Eddie Nolan converted their chances.
Striker Sam Sheridan was rewarded with a reserve team start after putting in some fine displays for the Wanderers Youth Academy and it was his pass that nearly let in Smith for a second goal in the 73rd minute.
Bolton could not find a killer second goal during the rest of the game but they hung on to end their campaign on a high despite the fact that Blackburn had much of the games possession throughout the evening.
