The young striker hit his sixteenth goal at reserve team level when substitute Andy Carroll flicked on a Craig Baxter throw in into his path but some good news for the Wanderers is that Irish international Joey O'Brien completed the whole game following a recent injury.
Wanderers could have gone ahead in the ninth minute of the game when Robert Sissons shot from a Johann Smith cross hit the post via a deflection of an onrushing Newcastle defender.
Two minutes later Finnigan had a chance at the other end of the field but his volley from Alan O'Brien's cross landed directly into the arms of Bolton's Omani international Ali Al-Habsi.
On the half hour mark United's Australian youngster James Troisi fired high and wide over the goal after the hard working Finnigan had nodded the ball into his path.
A minute before the referee blew for half time Bolton could have gone in front but defender Mark Ellis smashed the ball over the crossbar following a dangerous free kick from Matt Jansen.
After the re-start Newcastle went in front through Finnigan in a well worked team move but Wanderers could not force an immediate reply through Oscar Perez long range effort.
The Trotters had a penalty appeal turned down in the 54th minute as Newcastle left back Craig Baxter was adjudged to have turned Scott Jamieson's header out for a corner with his hand but the referee waved away any protests.
Jansen and substitute James Sinclair had late chances to give the Wanderers a share of the points but Newcastle defended well to extend their unbeaten run at Kingston Park.
