Bolton Wanderers Res. 3 Wigan Athletic Res. 0
By Mark Heys April 5 2006
Bolton Wanderers reserves produced their best performance of the season so far as they crushed local rivals Wigan Athletic by a 3-0 scoreline at the County Ground earlier this evening.
Jimmy Phillips had the luxury of naming a number of experienced faces in his line up for the first time this season and the selections paid dividens as the Wanderers claimed their first reserve league win in over two months.

Ivan Campo and Matt Jansen both gained some valuable match practise in what was their first competitive game in two months whilst the likes of Jared Borgetti, Hidetoshi Nakata, Ricardo Vaz-Te and Radhi Jaidi where given a chance to improve their fitness ahead of Sunday's important away game at Liverpool.

Indeed it was Jansen who gave Bolton the lead early doors when smashing home his first goal for the club past Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt following some good build up play involving strike partner Jared Borgetti.

The former Blackburn Rovers striker then went close with a low drive which was comfortably saved by Pollitt but it was clear to see that the Trotters had a keen desire and hunger to win the game and this was further strengthened with a few minutes of the half remaining when Mexican international Borgetti finished off a fine team move which involved Campo, Jansen and young wing back Danny Stott.

Bolton continued the second half in very much the same vein as they had ended the first as Ricardo Vaz-Te supplied the ammunition for the likes of Borgetti and American teenager Johann Smith to test the Wigan goal.

Smith wrapped the game up with less than ten minutes to go by tucking the ball past Pollitt after an excellent through ball by Hidetoshi Nakata had carved open the Wigan defence.

Wanderers must now travel to Middlesbrough next Tuesday evening in what will be the first of four remaining reserve league fixtures all of which will be played away from the County Ground but tonights victory is a huge confidence boost for all concerned.
