Ivan Campo was the only experienced name in the Bolton line-up and the veteran Spaniard blotted his copybook when sent off in the second half for a head butt on United's striker Sylvain Ebanks-Blake.
United had included the experienced Ole Gunner Solskjaer in their line up but the Norwegian international forward was upstaged by his junior strike partner Ebanks-Blake who helped himself to a hattrick either side of the interval against a hapless Wanderers team containing many Academy scholars.
Substitute Kyle Moran added a fourth United strike with Richie Jones sealing the Trotters fate with a fifth effort after Ebanks-Blake saw his shot parried by Wanderers keeper Chris Howarth.
