Experienced midfielder Skoko struck ten minutes before the interval after Alan Mahon's initial shot had been blocked by the Bolton defence. The Socceroos star took advantage of a generous rebound to fire the eventual matchwinner past Wanderers goalkeeper Chris Howarth.
Both sides had opportunities to gain the advantage earlier on in the half but Mahon saw his attempt curl over the crossbar after some good build up play by one time Swedish international Andreas Johansson.
The visiting Wanderers team also had a chance to take the lead but Bedi Buval was unable to keep his header down to sufficiently test the Latics goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, a self-confessed Bolton supporter!.
Pollitt was to make a string of fine saves in the second half to deny his home-town club as American winger Johann Smith twice stung the fingertips of the veteran custodian in an attempt to bring Bolton back into the game.
Ivan Campo and Nicky Hunt both came through the game showing no ill-effects after spending nearly two months on the sidelines so that is something that will please Bolton in-light of the fixture congestion that is coming up.
Bolton central defender Mark Ellis went close late on as Pollitt denied the Devon-born teenager a chance to salvage a point for the Trotters by keeping out his header which was looking goalbound all the way.
At the other end Wanderers were still on their toes and had their keeper Howarth to thank for keeping out an attempt by lively Irish striker David Connolly.
