In truth the Hammers will feel aggrieved at getting nothing for their efforts in a game which saw a number of chances spurned but Bolton on the other hand will be glad to have continued their fine undefeated record in London which stretches back to August 2004
The Wanderers welcomed back Bruno N'Gotty in place of the injured Radhi Jaidi and there was a place on the bench for new signing Hidetoshi Nakata following his recent loan move from Fiorentina
After a few half chances the first effort of the game fell the way of the home side on 12 minutes when the impressive Yossi Benayoun saw his curling effort palmed away by Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen
A few minutes later former Nottingham Forest striker Marlon Harewood spurned the first of two glorious chances to put the Hammers in front with the big forward completely misjudging the shot following an excellent ball from winger Matthew Etherington
On the half hour Stelios Giannakopoulos nearly celebrated his new Bolton contract with a goal but could not test West Ham goalkeeper Roy Carroll. The little Greek winger having fired over following a flick on by Kevin Davies
Shortly after ex-Bolton target Benayoun was in the thick of things again as he headed a right wing cross by Tomasz Repka straight into the arms of a grateful Jaaskelainen who was once again demonstrating why he is one of the best goalkeepers in the top league
Bolton's Kevin Davies and Gary Speed both had headers just off danger shortly before the break but the save of the match undoubtedly came with three minutes of the half remaining as Jaaskelainen kept out a close range effort from West Ham's Welsh international defender Danny Gabbidon following some confusion in the area
Harewood then missed another golden opportunity but was thankful when referee Phil Dowd brought the half to a close in an opening period which perhaps should have seen the Hammers at least one goal to the good
The second half was less frantic and this is where Bolton began to take on the advantage as a thunderous long range effort from substitute Ivan Campo rattled Carroll's crossbar to give the Londoners a taste of what was to come later on in the game
Shortly before the hour the deadlock was broken as Kevin Nolan somehow juggled the ball over the line and into the net in a packed penalty area after both Jay-Jay Okocha and Davies had seen their efforts blocked by the West Ham defenders
Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham was the oldest man on the pitch as he is approaching his 40th birthday but he showed that he can still keep up with the best of them during this game as he used his experience to great effect throughout the contest
Indeed the former Manchester United and England man was the Hammers best goalscoring threat in the second half as he fired the first of two chances wide on 72 minutes following a cross by substitute Bobby Zamora
The second such chance for Sheringham proved unlucky as he fired a stinging free kick off the crossbar which enabled the stunned Bolton defence a chance to clear their lines
England U21 star Nigel Reo-Coker saw his low drive kept out as the game entered the closing ten minutes of the contest but Bolton wrapped things up when Ivan Campo neatly slotted home on 85 minutes after Jay-Jay Okocha's pass had taken advantage of a very high West Ham defensive line.
Jaaskelainen was then called into action once more to keep out a volley from England cap Paul Konchesky with West Ham determined to score past a resolute Bolton defence
They got their wish in the final minute of the game allbeit through a gift as Wanderers full back Nicky Hunt clumsily upended Hayden Mullins in the area to allow the energetic Sheringham to confidently despatch a last minute penalty
This proved to be too little, too late for the Hammers as Bolton claimed their second victory in a week with perhaps three points against the run of the game, although that said the Trotters found themselves in a similar situation against Everton just over one week ago
