The former Sheffield United reserve struck with just ten minutes left on the clock, to hand Bury yet another famous victory against their more star studded Premiership opponents.
Things started off moderatly well for the Trotters, but they found themselves behind on 11 minutes when Bury full back Tom Kennedy confidently despatched a penalty past the Bolton keeper Ian Walker following a handball incident by Radhi Jaidi in the area.
Kevin Davies nearly forced an equaliser for Bolton a quarter of an hour later, but he could not keep his header down as Shakers keeper Neil Edwards watched the ball fly aimlessly over.
Former Rochdale stopper Edwards was then forced into a save a couple of minutes later when he got down well to a shot coming in from the Wanderers midfielder Kevin Nolan.
The veteran Edwards was then called into action once again shortly before the interval when he saved at point blank range from Davies who wasted a golden opportunity to make the scoreline level.
Sam Allardyce made changes a plenty at the half time break, with a number of Academy starlets being given their chance to shine in the second half, including youth internationals Jarostaw Fojut, Johann Smith and Scott Jamieson.
The Wanderers seemed to perform better with a less experienced side than that of the first period but they still found Bury a tought nut to crack as both Ricardo Vaz-Te and Leslie Thompson where kept out by the determined Edwards.
On 67 minutes Bolton pulled a goal back when the afforementioned Thompson curled an excellent free kick past Edwards on what was his first senior appearance for the club.
Thompson nearly put Wanderers into the lead soonafter but the final honours went the way of the home side when trialist substitute Jake Speight beat Walker at his near post to continue the Bury jinx that has existed between the two clubs over the last few years.
