Thailand U23 0 Bolton Wanderers 1
By Mark Heys July 23 2005
Bolton defeated the Thailand U23 team in the final of the Asia Cup thanks to a 79th minute penalty from Senegal striker El-Hadji Diouf.
Diouf despatched the second half penalty with confidence after the referee spotted a handball in the area by a Thailand defender. The African made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick, thus bringing the Asia Cup to England.

In truth, the hosts gave the Wanderers a tough time on occasions, but they found goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was on hand to ensure that Bolton did not suffer the same fate as Everton in midweek.

Indeed, it was Thai striker Pitchipong Choechew who had the best two chances of the opening quarter of an hour. Firstly, he stung the palms of Jaaskelainen with a well taken free-kick on ten minutes, and then he had the Bolton goalkeeper tested again a few minutes later with a low shot.

Kevin Davies spurned Bolton's best chance of the first half hour when he failed to put enough power behind his effort to severely force the Thai custodian Kosin Hathairattanakool into making a save.

Jaaskelainen was on hand to save Bolton shortly before the interval when finding himself in a one on one situation with Thailand substitute Chacrit Buathong. The Asian attacker had outpaced Wanderers defender Ivan Campo but he could not find a way past the highly rated Finnish player.

Eventual matchwinner Diouf had the opening chance after the re-start, but his inaccurate shot failed to cause the Thailand team any problems at all, as both he and fellow striker Henrik Pedersen found that the conditions slowed them down a touch.

With twenty minutes left on the clock, Pedersen thought he had provided a goal assist for Wanderers substitute Ricardo Vaz-Te, but unfortunately the Portuguese youngster headed into the side netting from point blank range when it seemed easier to score.

The miss did not matter though, as Diouf secured Bolton's name the Asia Cup with the 79th minute effort from the spot, in what is his first full competitive game at club level since the end of last season.
