Harry Webster (1930-2008) - An obituary
By Mark Heys April 3 2008
Bolton Wanderers have announced some sad news after it was learned that their former inside forward Harry Webster passed away suddenly yesterday at the age of 77 following a short spell in hospital.

Sheffield-born Mr Webster joined Walter Rowley's Bolton team from Woodburn in October 1948, just two months after he had celebrated his eighteenth birthday and in March 1950 he made his debut for the Wanderers in a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Maine Road.

In the 1950-1951 campaign he established himself as a first team regular, featuring in 33 games that year and becoming Bolton's second top goalscorer behind Nat Lofthouse.

His first goal for the club came in a 1-2 defeat at home to Sunderland in September 1950 and he followed this up with some impressive form in front of goal, including braces in the games against Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic.

The next two seasons thereafter he was plagued by injury and missed out on an appearance in the 1953 FA Cup Final against Blackpool despite helping the club on their way to the Wembley Final.

Once Bill Ridding had replaced Rowley as the Bolton manager Harry was used in a variety of positions including centre forward and outside left and in June 1958 he made the move to Chester City where he appeared in nigh on 100 games for them.

He ended his league career in 1959 and gave his experience to local non-league side Chorley from then on in and in later years has been a member of the Former Bolton Wanderers Players Association as well as keeping residence in the town.

His funeral will take place at the Overdale Crematorium on 9th April at 4pm and will be conducted by the Wanderers club chaplain Reverand Phil Mason.
