Bolton Wanderers Res 1. Sheffield United Res. 3
By Mark Heys August 30 2006
Johann Smith was sent off as Bolton Wanderers reserves crashed to a 3-1 defeat in their opening fixture of the new season against Sheffield United.
The 19-year old American was dismissed by match referee Mr Richardson shortly before the hour point after appearing to stamp on the Blades substitute defender Evan Horwood.

Bolton had named former Tottenham and Leicester goalkeeper Ian Walker in their starting eleven with the rest of their squad made up of players from the youth academy programme.

United on the other hand had no fewer than nine players with extensive football league and Premiership experience including the likes of ex-Manchester City stopper David Sommeil and one time Bury and Preston player Chris Lucketti.

Wanderers started the game well as the weather at the County Ground took a decided turn for the worse. Smith tested Blades goalkeeper Ian Bennett for the first save of the night on twelve minutes whilst Sheffield's Cristian Nade saw his shot on the turn kept out by Walker at the other end.

Experienced striker Neil Shipperley could have given the visitors the lead on 35 minutes but his header from Alan Wright's left wing cross went the wrong side of the post.

This miss proved costly momentarily for the Blades as defender Mark Charlesworth gave Bolton the lead six minutes before the interval when heading home a cross from Sean Mountford.

The celebrations proved to be short lived as striker Nade brought the Yorkshiremen back on level terms when his shot from distance confused Wanderers veteran custodian Walker.

Former Millwall man Paul Ifill increased the Sheffield lead to two moments after the re-start when smashing the ball past Walker following an excellent through ball by Irish midfielder Alan Quinn.

Bolton's misery was further compelled on 58 minutes when lively front man Smith was shown the red card when stamping on his marker and United substitute Evan Horwood.

This later allowed ex-City man David Sommeil a chance to wrap up the victory for the Blades as he fired in an awkward shot which sailed past Walker for the winning goal.
