Bolton Wanderers 2. Tottenham Hotspur 0.
By Mark Heys August 19 2006
Pre-season distruptions and setbacks proved to be a distant memory as Bolton Wanderers began the new season with a fine 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this evening.

The games only goals came within the first quarter of an hour as Kevin Davies and Ivan Campo put the Wanderers in the driving seat and on course to gain their first three valuable points of the new campaign.

Bolton where able to call upon three of their injured players for this game as Davies, Nicky Hunt and Quinton Fortune where all given the all-clear to line up against the Londoners.

Davies inclusion proved to pay off when just nine minutes into the match he rose unchallenged to powerfully head an accurate Gary Speed corner from the right side past Spurs keeper Paul Robinson.

It proved to be a case of second time lucky for the Wanderers as moments earlier they had seen a similar set piece cleared out of harms way by the Tottenham centre half Callum Davenport.

On 13 minutes the game exploded even further into life as Spanish veteran Campo leathered home a superb shot from distance which completely confuddled goalkeeper Robinson. The former Real Madrid man lashed the ball home from all of 30-yards after the Spurs defence only half cleared the danger from another dangerous Bolton attack.

The second Wanderers goal proved to spark Spurs into action and whilst they saw a lot of the ball the Bolton defence was well organised and alert to prevent any real danger from occuring.

Spurs best clear cut chance of the opening half came when debutant Dimitar Berbatov combined well with Jermain Defoe. However the England striker was to see his crafty curling effort well saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal.

Ten minutes before the break it was the turn of Robinson to produce a fine save when keeping out Gary Speed's free kick. The veteran Welshman Speed had fired in the effort towards the top corner but the former Leeds keeper stretched well to force the ball to safety.

Shortly after the half time interval the otherwise quiet Lennon nearly brought Spurs back into the match but his plethora of twists and turns could not outfox the alert Bolton defender Tal Ben-Haim who launched himself in front of the resulting shot by the young right winger.

Trotters skipper Kevin Nolan was inches away from giving Bolton a third goal on 55 minutes but his placed shot following a Michael Dawson error just landed the wrong side of Robinson's right post.

Spurs brought on Robbie Keane in an attempt to improve matters just before the hour mark and his introduction nearly paid dividens as he was involved in the build up which nearly presented fellow striker Berbatov with his first goal in English football

The former Bayer Leverkusen man looked as if he had rounded Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen but the Big Finn had other ideas when diving bravely at the feet of the Bulgarian attacker to keep the Bolton goals against column blank.

With 25 minutes left on the clock the impressive Bolton forward Diouf could have opened his goal account for the season but his quick reactions with a stooping header where met with an equally impressive save by Robinson from a few yards out.

A win for Bolton is quite an achievement when you consider that they did not have the best of pre-seasons. Hopefully, this morale boosting result will give them much confidence for their trips to the capital to take on Fulham and Charlton next week.
