When it was revealed that Paul Merson was in negotiations with the Saddlers no one could believe the news. He finally signed on July 18th, 2003.

He has won cups, championships and England caps. He was one of the penalty takers against the Argentines in France 98'. He has played with and against the best.

He was here to help the Saddlers.

He inspired the 4-1 demolition of Albion, but that was as good as it got. He failed to find his form when used as a striker, then hit rock bottom and went to an American clinic for treatment.

He later took over as caretaker manager but was unable to save us from relegation. He has now been appointed manager of Walsall FC and is building a young squad which he feels is capable of bouncing back to Division 1.

The hopes of a promotion chasing campaign slowly died as Christmas approached. A Brief flirtation with the relegation zone was avoided with a good run of 5 wins on the bounce - a strong of results that many feel saved Merson his job after what turned out to be a poor season.

Merson the player had an average season, his performance in the Colchester (home) and Huddersfield (home) games were a throw back to his glory days, but Merse ended the season out of the side and on the bench !
