Danny Hay was David O'Leary's first signing at Leeds United. He had impressed while playing for Ozzie outfit Perth Glory, and had all the qualities to succeed in English football.

Unfortunately for Danny his time at Leeds was spent on the treatment table. He only managed 6 appearances including one in the Nou Camp against Barcelona. 

His three seasons at Leeds came to an end in 2002, when he joined Colin Lee's Saddlers on a free transfer. Lee intended to nurse him through the early months, but an injury crisis at the back saw him involved from straight away. He formed a good understanding with Ian Roper, and became a first choice selection for the rest of the season.  

He was one of Walsall's most consistent players in the first half of the season,  with his only low point being a debatable sending off against Derby at Pride Park (2-2).

He recovered from a lengthily lay off in April only to injure his shoulder in his first game b. He was fit enough to participate in the Confederations Cup , where he lined up against Japan, Columbia and France.

Anderlecht, Crewe and a host of German clubs were supposed to interested in Hay following the tournament, but he returned to Bescot and signed up for another 12 months. However, Hay failed to settle and after a series of personal problems headed back home to NZ where he signed for the Auckland Kingz.
