Coventry Rugby Club Appeal up and running
By John Wilkinson June 18 2008
THE appeal to save Coventry Rugby Club is up and running - and gaining momentum all the time. Telephone calls and emails have been pouring in to the Coventry Telegraph offices supporting our appeal to raise £100,000. We have just two weeks to raise the money which will be used as a security bond to be lodged with the Rugby Football Union for a period of two years.

The RFU will then allow the historic club to play on in National Division One, as they monitor the management of the club.

If the money isn't raised Cov will be relegated to a lower league, effectively putting them out of business.

Coventry Building Society has generously agreed to accept donations to the fund at any of their branches and on-line.

Three trustees have been appointed to administer the fund. They are club president and former England international Peter Rossborough, vice-president John Walton and club historian John Butler.

Rossborough said: "I never thought I would find myself in the position of trying to rescue Coventry RFC, it would have been unbelievable in other periods of the club's long existance, but for a variety of reasons it has happened.

"Owner Andrew Green has bent over backwards to accomodate the RFU, but the bond was just one demand too many.

"I really appreciate that the Coventry Telegraph has taken up the baton and is running with it, and I'm very hopeful that it will have a huge impact on the Coventry public who have been fantastic supporters of the club in the past and that we can get the funds needed.

"We can't let a club that has been here since 1874, and been an excellent ambassador for Coventry across the whole country and abroad, to disappear.

"I just hope that local supporters, former players and businesses will put their hands in their pockets and make a donation of however much to ensure the future of Coventry Rugby Club, and I thank everyone for their support."

Pledges of support and donations have been arriving at the Telegraph from fans, former players and well-wishers all over the country who are anxious to see the name of the club continue.

An independent meeting has been called at Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane, on Friday (7.30pm) which all supporters of Coventry, and the appeal, are invited to attend with an opportunity to air their views and receive latest information.

HOW YOU CAN GIVE

You can make a donation in cash or cheque at any branchh of Coventry Building Society quoting account number 060786949

Cheques should be made payable to Coventry Rugby Club Trust.

If you have internet banking you can make a direct payment quoting the Society's sort-code 40-63-01 and account number 60786949. You do not need to quote an additional reference number.

The building society is simply accepting donations to the fund.

The welfare of donations will be the responsibility of the Board of Trustees managing the appeal.

They will decide what should happen to the money if it is refunded to them at the end of the two year security period or if the fund raising falls short.

They may consider a refund for those who have receipts (receipts are only available when making a donation over the counter at a branch of the Coventry Building Society).

They may opt to donate tha cash to charity, possibly a local rugby cause.

Great news re the fund - Lets get behind it. However......
It does worry me with the final paragraph:-

"They will decide what should happen to the money if it is refunded to them at the end of the two year security period or if the fund raising falls short.

They may consider a refund for those who have receipts (receipts are only available when making a donation over the counter at a branch of the Coventry Building Society).

I dont want to appear a damp squib but personally this will limit the amount of money I would be willing to 'donate' to the cause. If the money goes to helping the club survive then obviously I would be willing to donate but this sum would be less if there is a chance that the money will go to another cause other than CRFC after the 2 year period or if the money raised is not enough. Does anyone else feel the same? I wonder if this should be thought about - QUICKLY!

I agree abdabs. I will put in my £20, but no more than that - I was v happy when the money was either used as explained, or returned, but the ambiguity of "they may do this, they may do that" has put me off slightly.

One other question someone might be able to answer - who is John Walton other than one of AG's men - not sure I'm comfortable with someone having one foot in AG's camp and the other in the fund. I've no issue with Pete Rossborough and JB, Coventry will always be 1st with them.

Especially after the way John Walton accused the RFU “I believe Andrew Green has been put under intolerable pressure and duress to accept an agreement which, if he signs, will give the RFU rights they have no lawful right to expect. Added Walton: "There will be consequences for the RFU if they attempt to throw out Coventry. We will get a fighting fund together, say the RFU acted illegally and insist on the reinstatement of the club."

Strikes me we need trustee members to work with the RFU not attack them in the local paper?

In reply to these queries i am not sure what happened but i have just had clarification from John Butler about the refunds etc.
"Doners will be fully entitled to the return of their money either if the appeal fails, or at the end when it is returned,if that becomes their wish.Receipts must be kept as the Building Society cannot log individual donations by name etc.
All monies not reclaimed by the donees will not go to the club. The Trustees have it in mind to donate to a charity, possibly the Cov& MW Union Benevolent Fund for Injured Players."

I hope this clarifies the matter. please let me no if there are any further problems with the wording. At the meeting on Friday this will also be fully covered.

Hi Tom,

I think this is a VERY serious error in communication and think it should be ammended wherever possible. If the monies are to be returned then I am pretty sure that this will change Greatly the amount of monies that will be donated - not just by myself. The article on the Cov Telegraph web site does not point this out - so it is good news if this is the case.

Thanks for clarifying it.
