Chester wave goodbye
By Chris Thompson April 30 2005
Chester waved goodbye to the 200 fans who stayed behind for the lap of honour as Chester lose to Northampton two-goals-to-nil at the Saunder's Honda Stadium-the last home game of the season.
Chester turned in a thoroughly disappointing performance to the 2,000 Chester fans who turned up to wave goodbye to the lads, and to anyone who visits Oxford next weekend-after today’s showing-well that’s what you call a loyal supporter. For only 3,000 turned up in what is Chester’s final home game of the season, an end to a real disappointing season in Chester’s return to League football-and even then, a third of those who paid to watch were from the Midland’s club, who were seeking entry into the playoffs with just 2 games remaining.
Chester’s showing leaves a lot to think about for Keith Curle, who was appointed yesterday, and unveiled to the fans moments before the match start, before taking his seat in the director’s box.
If there’s one thing which can be said about David Bell’s side during his short stint as caretaker manager, following the departure of Ian Rush, it’s that his players play on confidence, a fact reflected in Chester’s first two games under his charge. Against Bury, Chester conceded after a poor start, and it took a goal to re-ignite the side before delivering a shock 2-1 turnaround, and the same can be said for against Bristol Rovers, when City clawed back a draw-and nearly a win-having gone two goals down in the first half.

City lined out with Chris McKenzie in his custom spot in between the posts. A depleted defence read Stephen Vaughan at right-fullback, to his left, Phil Bolland, assisted in the centre by Richard Hope, and finally Carl Regan, cities only option on the left, with Shaun Hessey suspended, and Ashley Nicholas returned to Swindon.
Stewart Drummond, Paul Carden and Ben Davies figured in a three-man midfield, which was assisted on the wings by Robbie Booth and Robbie Foy, Ryan Lowe heading the attack.
