With the match fizzling out into a no-score draw, a small group of lads sat near the away end started up the chant "you're just a town full of bombers", which the away fans immediately took exception to and vented their anger back at this group. Most of the Hull crowd did not hear the chant and were puzzled to what could have provoked such a reaction. Two individuals were later ejected from the stadium in connection to the chants.
After the match QPR fan's anger threatened to turn to violence, as a small number of incensed supporters roamed around the Car Park in an aggressive manner, other QPR fans were said to have left the match early in tears.
Condemning the chant Chairman Adam Pearson issued a statement on the Official Web site: "On behalf of the Club I would like to unreservedly apologise to all Queens Park Rangers supporters who were subjected to this unbelievably ignorant and distressing chant. The group of youths who were involved with this chant will be identified and will be dealt with in the most swingeing manner possible.
"Hull City Football Club accepts full responsibility to sort this social behaviour problem out within this particular group of youths and once again apologies unreservedly for any distress caused to the traveling supporters of QPR."
In an interview with the Hull Daily Mail, manger Peter Taylor expressed his apologises: "I'm very, very disappointed with what happened. I've no doubts it was a minority in one corner of the stadium and they should grow up and behave themselves.
"What they were saying was very hurtful and I personally would like to apologise to QPR supporters. I hope our experienced fans get hold of the people responsible and give them a clip around the ear."
There is now an investigation by the club and Police who are studying video footage of the crowd to ascertain the culprits. In the meantime the club has said that blocks N7 and E1 of the KC Stadium will be closed for future games.
