The former Scotland U-21 international joins on a two-year deal. He was top-scorer for Port Vale during the 2003/04 season with 27 goals before moving to Portugal on a free transfer to join the then Beira Mar manager Mick Wadsworth. However the club sacked Wadsworth after 4 games and proceeded to sack a further 2 managers during a season which saw the club relegated from the top-flight.
McPhee only scored 6 goals last season having been played in a number of different positions, but he comes to the KC Stadium as an out-and-out striker and will be fighting it out with Craig Fagan, Nick Barmby and Ben Burgess to be in the starting line up come August.
Speaking to the Official Club website, the striker says "There were a few big Portuguese clubs that were showing an interest in me as well as some other Championship teams, but I had a good talk with Peter Taylor and he told me what his plans were and I think Hull City are a club with great potential.....Peter was definitely a major influence in my decision to sign for the club, He's got a great reputation and I'm looking forward to working with him next season."
Peter Taylor believes the 23-year-old will be a big hit, "Now, I think we've got players in the squad who are very different and I'm delighted that Steve has joined us. He is someone that I've looked at for a long, long time. I always made enquiries about him when I was with Brighton and he played against us a couple of times. I always thought then that he was a good player and he'll be a decent signing for us......Steve scores goals but can also beat people. He can create goals for himself and that's one of the things I like about him."
Speaking about other possible signings, the Tigers boss went on to reveal, "It was said that we'd bring in five or six players and we now have Steve McPhee and Curtis Woodhouse on board. We're still working away on one or two things behind the scenes and there'll be a few more players to come."
