DSE National Short Course Championship 2004 Report

On the weekend of November 6th and 7th, two of our swimmers represented the Welsh region that competed in the DSE National Short Course Championship 2004. The two Dragons swimmers that were competing were S17 swimmer Anthony Gregory and S14 swimmer Johnathan Aynge.

The gala was the first opportunity to see some of the swimmers who represented Great Britain at the Athens 2004 Paralympics return to competition. Some of these swimmers on show included Gold medalists Gareth Duke, Graham Edmunds, Robert Welbourn, Nyree Lewis, Andrew Lindsay, Sacha Kindred and Jim ‘the swim’ Anderson.

Anthony Gregory was competing in the newly formed classification, S17 which is for swimmers with Dyspraxia. This classification has been introduced by Disability Sport England and will allow swimmers with Dyspraxia to compete up to a National level. Johnathan Aynge was competing in the highly competitive S14 category for swimmers with Learning difficulties.

Anthony had a very successful meet winning three Gold’s and one Silver medal. His Gold medals came in the men’s S17 50 metre Freestyle, 50 meter Backstroke and 100 metre Backstroke. He won his Silver medal in the men’s S17 100 metre Freestyle.

Johnathan entered two races, the men’s S14 50 meter Freestyle and 100 metre Freestyle. In this highly competitive field, Johnathan equipped himself well and finished 23rd in the 50 metre Freestyle and 22nd in the 100 metre freestyle.

Congratulations to both Anthony and Johnathan.
