Rovers Bag a Pair

First League Goal!
By Matthew the Rover October 30 2005
Tranmere finally got back to winning ways in League One and also got back to scoring ways as they returned from Doncaster with three much needed points after debut League goals from Steve Davies and Steven Jennings.

Tranmere bagged a pair of ducks for only the second time this season today, as they successfully kept opposition Doncaster Rovers out, to make it two clean sheets in a row after their 2-0 win at Belle Vue.

Young talent Steven Davies opened his Rovers account in the 61st minute and midfielder Steven Jennings scored his second in three games as Rovers scored their first league goals for 555 minutes of football, the win also being Tranmere’s first in 10 league games and only the second time Rovers have managed to score twice away from home this season.

The first half was dull, much like the same tie between the two clubs last season when the final score was 0-0.  Rovers in fact forced the only save in the first 45 minutes, with Doncaster keeper Jan Budtz making the save from Mike Jackson’s header.

On-loan midfielder Steven O’Leary, making his first start for the club, shone in the second half, along with second goal scorer, Steven Jennings, and center back Ian Sharps, as Brian Little changed the formation to 4-3-3, and it paid off.

Rovers broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, after some good second half pressure, which had seen Budtz make a string of saves from Facey, Greenacre and Davies, whilst down the other end, Tranmere ‘keeper, John Achterberg, had saved well from former Newcastle player Jamie Coppinger.

Rovers scored when Budtz lost the ball to striker Delroy Facey and when the ball fell to Steven Davies 25-yards out, the striker had no hesitation in volleying a brilliant shot into the open net to claim his first goal for the club.

Still Rovers were not in control of the game, as John Achterberg made a mistake to allow Paul Heffernan through, but fortunately the Doncaster striker headed wide.

With 20 minutes left, Rovers made their only substitution of the match.  Goal scorer Steven Davies was replaced by defender Ian Goodison, as Rovers switched to 5-3-2.  As Goodison was relegated to the substitutes bench, Deadly Submarine will now have to run around Prenton Park with a turnip on his head, shouting “I love Mickey Mellon” after he made a bet on the Total Tranmere forum.

With 12 minutes to go, Steven Jennings had a shot from 16-yards saved well again by the stretching leg of Budtz, but in stoppage time, there was nothing Budtz could do as the pair came together again.  Jennings beat the offside trap, rounded Budtz and then kept his head, putting the ball into the empty net to claim his first League goal for Rovers and make it 2-0 and complete Tranmere’s second away win of the season in nine attempts.

The result also moves Tranmere out of the bottom four for the first time since the beginning of the month.  Rovers climbed two places from 21st place to 19th, and now have 17 points, of which four of them have come in their last two league matches.
