Greenacre Brace Not Enough for Rovers
By Mark Ridgway September 20 2008
A first-half brace from Chris Greenacre couldn't prevent Rovers from failing to take all three points at London Road as Peterborough United fought back from 2-0 down to earn a draw that some would argue they barely deserved although based on the second half they probably did.

Tranmere earned a hard fought point at London Road this afternoon thanks to a brace from Chris Greenacre which were his first goals of the season and made it four points from the last two away games now for Rovers.

Greenacre's double had given Rovers a 2-0 lead but they were pegged back and hung on in the end for a point.

It was the same line up that started the match away at Huddersfield last week so the team looked like this:

----------------Coyne-----------------

-Shotton- Chorley -Goodison-Taylor-

-Moore---Kay--- Jennings ---Sonko-

---------Savage----Greenacre---------

In the first few minutes there was chances at both ends, first Eddy Sonko headed wide for Rovers and at the other end Craig Mackail-Smith hit the inside of the post for Posh after a defensive mix up between Chorley and Coyne.

The next chance brought the opener when Ian Goodison's cross was met by Chris Greenacre and his header went high into the net for his first of the campaign.

The teams seemed to be very even for the following ten minutes but then Rovers began to take control and first Sonko's header was saved and Chris Greenacre looked to be fouled as he attempted to add a second. The same player then volleyed over from six yards.

Greenacre wasn't to miss his next chance though, when a poor clearance fell to him, he then rounded Lewis and rolled the ball over the line for a second.

However it didn't take long for Boro to reduce the deficit when the in form Craig Mackail-Smith headed in and it was 2-1.

Mackail-Smith and Sonko both shot over for each team as the teams went in for half time at 2-1 to the visitors.

Half Time: Peterborough 1-2 Tranmere

The first chance of the second half came to Chris Greenacre but he volleyed over from and Antony Kay knock down.

Minutes later Kay shot wide as Rovers looked for a third before Ryan Shotton then headed over and Boyd's effort was saved by Coyne at the other end.

With just over ten minutes left posh equalised when Gabriel Zakuani headed in a Martin corner and the sides were level.

Craig Curran then replaced Chris Greenacre for the visitors and Danny Coyne then did well to save a one-on-one with Batt with his feet.

Martin then hit the side nettings with a free kick and the game ended with a few half chances but nothing to serious. It was a good point for Rovers who seem to be picking up some form away from home at last.

Full Time: Peterborough 2-2 Tranmere

Chris Greenacre

Ben Chorley and Ian Goodison were immense at the back for Rovers as ever but for his brace of goals and an all round great performance, Chris Greenacre just shades it.
