Rovers Chase Former Walsall Duo
By Deadly Submarine July 8 2008
It’s believed that Tranmere are close to signing one former Walsall player and may be about to sign a second as well as a former Manchester United defender to replace Robbie Stockdale at right-back when the new season kicks off in juts over a months time.

Rovers’ Chase Former Walsall Duo

After a quiet spell on the transfer and rumour front, things seem to be hotting up again at Prenton Park with news that Rovers are close to at least two signings and possibly more ahead of Saturday's home friendly against Liverpool at Prenton Park.

According to local reports, Rovers reportedly gave a medical to former Walsall attacking midfielder Edrissa Sonko yesterday and are also taking a look in training at another ex-Bescot player in defender Michael Dobson who is thought to have signed a two year deal at the Club although confirmation of this is still awaited.

28 year-old Sonko began his career at Anderlecht and also played for Roda JC before joining Walsall in July 2007.  He was released from the Bescot Stadium at the end of last season.

Michael Dobson is a year younger than Sonko and began his career at Brentford as a trainee before spending five months at Reading prior to joining Walsall in 2006 and spending two seasons there before being released at the end of the 2007/08 season.

It's reported that Rovers are also giving a trial to former Manchester United trainee and subsequent Blackburn Rovers defender John Curtis.

Curtis, 30, who would most likely be a replacement at right-back for the departed Robbie Stockdale is currently looking for his tenth professional club and is thought to have been training this week with the Rovers squad.

Following the exclusive news here on Total Tranmere last week about the possible signing of Cork City midfielder George O'Callaghan, it has been reported that Ronnie Moore has signed and Irish player but it is not known if O'Callaghan is that man as yet.

Rovers midfielder Steven Jennings meanwhile is thought to be close to re-signing for the club although details of the length of his new contract are still unclear.

We will bring you any new of new signings when they occur so stay tuned to Total Tranmere during the course of this week.

A two-year deal for Dobson? That wouldn't really fill me with confidence.

Some of the other reports sound promising however and it would be a relief just to get some new faces in after so long.

Not the exciting signings I would have liked (probably because I don't know much about them - besides Curtis). But I've looked at their stats etc and they look like they could do something good at this level (perhaps - time will tell). A bit concerned whether or not Sonko would face work permit problems a la Zola?

Both released by Walsall? Again not signings that fill me with hope but we just need numbers at the minute.
