Youngster joins Championship club
By Matthew Jones June 12 2008
Tranmere Rovers have today lost young prospect Steve Davies, as the twenty year old striker-come-left-winger finally put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Championship side Derby County after weeks of speculation, with the two clubs set to agree a fee for the player over the coming days.
Steve Davies joins Derby County

Derby County have finally officially signed 20-year old young talent Steve Davies from Tranmere Rovers after weeks of speculation.

The transfer is subject to a fee being agreed by the two clubs, but the writing has been on the wall for Rovers for months now, with Davies believed to have refused to sign a new contract as early as October after Tranmere rejected an offer of over £500,000 from Leeds United for the player in August.

Striker-come-left-winger Davies burst on to the scene at the start of the 2005/06 season as he scored the only goal as a subsitute in his Prenton Park debut against Manchester City in a 1-0 friendly win.

Continued progression eventually saw the youngster become the first choice left-winger on the Wirral for the 2007/08 season after the departure of Kevin Ellison. However, after a brilliant pre-season and then excellent start to the campaign just gone, Davies injured his cruciate knee-ligaments on September 30th and made just two more appearances in the season.

Davies has signed a three-year contract with the Rams and now it is only the fee that Derby will have to pay Rovers for the player that remains to be decided, because he is under 24.

We will have to wait and see whether this move proves to be the correct one for Davies' career, whilst Total Tranmere wishes him all the best for the future.

Can't see him even getting a game to be honest with the signings they have made, but if he is willing to sit on the bench then good luck to him.

To be honest i think Steve Davies is making a big mistake moving to Derby. 1 I dont think he will get a game and 2 i dont think he is a polished player, another couple of seasons with Tranmere might have sorted that bit of his game out. but hey money talks in football these days and he is young so gone for the GREEDY option like so many before him 3 - 4 years he will be back in this division (remember Sean Thornton!!)

According to the Beeb, he is Derby's seventh signing so far, and they haven't finished yet!!

It was inevitable. Just hope we can get a decent sum

I think his case is completely incomparable to Thornton's. Davies has only played by the rules, let his contract run out and left. Thornton on the other hand decieved and lied to the club, illegally trained with Sunderland and then left. He in fact told Tranmere he was in Ireland caring for his sick mother when he was training with The Black Cats. Davies has done nothing of the sort.

Personally, I feel Davo has left a little too early. Another year here, getting more experience and making himself a better, or as Karl Eyres puts it (and a good point it is Karl), making himself a more polished player. Indeed, another year, or even seven months until January here and who knows, if things were going well, as I expect they would have been, then a Premier League club might have come calling.

As it is, he's left to further his career with a much better and bigger club. Good luck to him, hopefully we'll see him back here playing for us one day.

I don't think it is completely incomparable. There are similarities like that fact that he has left early. Like that fact that the club have (apparantly) been left unknowing for a while.

He's a Derby lad now. Even if he is on the bench he'll enjoy his time more in a bigger and better club.

Wouldn't you?

I'm dissapointed the way Davo has treated Les Parry more than anything- He has looked after him all this time and he just simply @#$%& him off- bang out of order. @#$%&.

i disagree, i would rather be at a club like tranmere playing week in week out, improving my quality. than sitting on the bench at a championship side doing nothing, maybe playing the odd carling cup game.

i agree that he should have stayed here for another season at least to improve himself and show some gratitude to the club who made him into a player.

But he went for greed and thats his option but don't be urprised to see him back in league 1 in a couple of yearswith some random team like thornton is.

Its not being bitter at all, I obviously have a different outlook on the issue thats all. As some people have said, he hasn't proven himself yet, is unlikely to go straight into the Derby team and after guding him back from his injury has left as soon as pound sings are flashed in front of him. Some of their fans are even saying they have brought him for the future, and will not be used that often this season.

Maybe a loan move elsewhere? maybe there was an option for him to come back here.

some blame has to go to ronnie, if the player + manager relationship was better ronnie would have got the truth out of him regarding if he wanted to leave or not, and we could have sold him to leeds!! for 500k we could have got a striker and a left winger, 100k however, and we will just end up with some old has been!!

If Davies had of been fit though then we may of got more than 500k in January or at the tribunal if he improved a lot.

Also if he had stayed fit and helped us win promotion that'd be worth more than 500k.

End of the day you need to take into account that Davis has treated TRFC like shi@! And he has also treated Les Parry like shi:! Who aided him in his recovery! Also yet again some blame has to go on Ronnie due to their player manager relationship! Even though Ronnie done his best to keep Davies at the club by offering him a high salary, it still didnt please Davis. In my opinion TRFC should have broken the bank to keep him! But yet again the greed from up rising TRFC players has been shown. E.G Thornton, Koumas

for your information koumas had had offers galore but stayed at tranmere. suggest you get your facts straight before gobbing off.He never wanted to leave trfc at the time he was forced to go.Gareth roberts was another player that never wanted to leave.
Dario Gradi has just said it all in a piece on the BBC website about players greed.

What an absolute tool. So Ronnie Moore is to blame that Davies didn't want to stay? Yer that one makes sense! Plus we're supposed to go over our limits and risk bankruptcy to keep ONE player. What a load of wank.

Have glanced over the thread above but rather than reply to all of the various points made, I will just give my view on the matter and refer to a few points made above so apologies if it duplicates what people have said above.

With regard to breaking the bank to get Davies, from what I have heard they have done just that and still to no avail.

Davies was reportedly offered a five year contract last summer but even then refused to sign it.

As Matt says, the statement made by the Club shouldn't be taken as the whole truth (I'm sure Miss Rogers has ensured some spin was involved) but if it is true that Davies was offered the best contract ever offered to someone under 21 then the Club could have done no more to keep him.

As for Davies himself, he deserves the right to further his career as much as any other player although for the record I don't think this move will necessarily pay-off in terms of regular football.

You could argue that if Davies definitely wasn't going to be a Rovers player next season, then why would Rovers need to know he was signing for Derby but the arguement against that is that whether he was in contract or not a fee is required and Tranmere deserved to know what was going on.

I will give him a good reception when/if he faces us again as I do with all former players bar Thornton (for the reason Matt gives above).

Don't be so melodramatic Adam. It is part of football people ebding up in the lower leagues. He shoud have a contingency plan for if this happens. I dare say that once he has seen out three years at Derby what ever happened to him he would be able to set himslf up with something.
