Tranmere finally managed to escape with a scrappy victory against Bristol City in a hard fought match. Rovers left it late as John Mullin scored an 85th minute winner which gave Rovers a deserved 3 points.

Tranmere created several chances and it could off been a rout if it wasn’t for the City keeper Adriano Basso.

Ronnie Moore went with the same line-up that he has used for the last four games.

Tranmere had many chances in the first half but just couldn’t finish them. In the opening 5 minutes the Tranmere fans got right behind the team and Gareth Taylor put a header wide from a Shane Sherriff cross.  Taylor then nodded just over the bar from a free kick won by Iain Goodison.

Tranmere were playing good football and the team looked like they had gelled! Rovers soon had penalty appeals turned down, one which Ellison was pulled down and was surely a penalty.

City keeper pulled off a magnificent save when he stopped a powerful header from Chris Greenacre and th rebound from Gareth Taylor was cleared for a corner.

Rovers defence were kept on their toes as goodison blocked a close shot from Keogh on 30 minutes.

Rovers were then once again on the attack and Chris Greenacres shot was cleared off the line by Louis Carey for a corner but many Rovers fans were shouting for a penalty

Rovers started brightly in the 2nd half. In the 48th minute Iain Goodison forced a brilliant save out of Basso who had saved Citys lives many a time.

After an hour Taylor once again held the ball up then played the ball through to Shuker and his curled cross eventually went out for a corner as Kevin Ellison struggled to reach it.

Rovers really started hitting shots now as Shuker, Taylor and Mullin all hit shots wide in a 5 minute period.

Rovers finally broke through the Bristol defence in the 85th minute. A long ball from Sherriff too Taylor was inch accurate as Taylor the ball on and Mullin simply slotted away from 12 yards.

Robbie Stockdale then made a few important tackles as Rovers sealed the victory!

Man of the Match

Gareth Taylor It could off been Goodison or Sherriff but what really made it for Taylor was winning EVERY header while being fouled and hardly winning any free kicks. Had a good roll in many moves and held the ball up well.

Gaffer’s Verdict

(Ronnie Moore Speaks to Tranmere’s Obfficial Website)

“It was a narrow win, but we were full value for it. We ground out a result against a good side. Its full marks for us for endeavor, hanging in their and doing the right thing. We got the reward”

“We defender well and did the right thing in the right areas, we threw body’s in when we needed too. We maybe lacked a bit of quality with the final ball in at times. But when we got it right we got in there and scored the goal”

“The game is 90 minutes and we kept going and going and got the win eventually.”

“I’m pleased with the progress, we needed to win and we won. It would have been nice to have won by three or four goals and gone top but were level on points with Nottingham Forest and if someone had said that to me at the beginning of the season I would have been thankful!”

“The crowd stuck behind us and it was nice that they kept going. Some of the disbelievers are starting to believe, I don’t want to sound like the pied piper getting the whistle out so people start coming down Borough Road but that’s what we want. The fans were good tonight, without us being too excited there was a good atmosphere.”

“Hopefully we can kick on from here, we have to make sure that we go to Rotherham and do the right thing.”
